Customer Reviews of Dualit 4-Slice Toaster, Chrome
Customer Rating: Summary: Not for a busy house Comment: This toaster is like that old boyfriend that didn't work and didn't treat you well but was so good looking you didn't want to give him up. I gave it 3 years of my life before finally facing the truth! Sure, it impresses my friends at a party, but bottom line I need a toaster that works, and this one just doesn't. It's not a defective unit, but is just so much work! It will not toast bread unless you "warm it up." Who has time for that? It effectively lengthens the toasting time to 4-5 minutes or more. Also, the slots are too thin and short for even our store-bought whole wheat bread and I have to put it in vertically, resulting in uneven toasting. No bread I have ever bought fits the proportions of the slots so I really don't know if it toasts evenly when bread is inserted the correct way. Also, the unit cools down quickly - if you don't get that toast out of there right away, it's too cold to butter. Maybe I'll buy a cheaper toaster that works but keep this one on the counter so I can enjoy its good looks. I wonder what I'll do with all my free time in the morning?? Customer Rating: Summary: 2nd one in 15 years Comment: The best toaster made. This is our 2nd toaster in 15 years. We bought this exact same model when we were first married and we expect this new toaster to outlast the first model. These appliances are workhorses!. Customer Rating: Summary: The best over-priced toaster on the market... Comment: If you find yourself considering buying a $200 toaster then you already know that nothing else on the market can touch this. Yes there are toasters with better features and more technological advances but you aren't buying this toaster for that. The Dualit is all about timeless design and feel. I don't regret this purchase nearly as much as I should... One a side note, one of the toaster tray clips was broken in transit, I emailed dualit and had a replacement mailed out within a week... Customer Rating: Summary: High Infant Mortality Rate - Two Defective Units - Poorly Designed Comment: I bought this toaster and it arived and as soon as I plugged it in there was a spark inside and my circuit breaker tripped. I sent it back and my next one was DOA. It turns out that the exact same thing was the root of my problems. This time I opened it up a found that the black power cord had pulled off of its connector. The reason it pulled off is that it is wrapped around a 3 ounce metal doughnut (which is typically used to reduce line noise in devices like computers or monitors). Why would a toaster care about line noise? It's a toaster and not some hi-tech piece of electronics. Anyway, shipping this unit has about an 100% chance that the electrical connection will become disconnected. The connector is pretty far from the bottom and I had to disassemble more than I wanted to to re-attach it. Keep in mind that I'm servicing a brand-new $300+ appliance just to get it working. Now I know why there's a warning sticker on the bread crumb pan that warns you to unplug the unit prior to removing the pan. Are you kidding me? This indicates that Dualit knows that the power connector can come loose and enegize the entire outside of the toaster but has done nothing to prevent it (like mounting that doughnut thing on something). Now the good part: I have been using a toaster oven to make toast for years. I didn't realize how much of a difference a dedicated toaster would make. In fact, the toast is far superior when using a toaster as oposed to a toaster oven; however, I think that any toaster would perform just as well. In the areas of durability, commercial quality and superiority, I don't think Dualit meets my expectations in any one of them. The metal (at least is metal) is quite thin and has poor fit between pieces. The heating elements are thinner than a paper clip. I'm really not impressed and wish I bought a $30 B&D toaster and saved a bunch of money. Lastly, don't even think about buying the sandwich basket since it's just too small. For about the same price, you can buy a real commercial toaster from Waring or Oster and it will last forever. Update 8/08: Reported electrocution concern to US Consumer Product Safety Commission and they sent out an agent to review my toaster. The agent said it was a good report and that W&S and Dualit will be investigated. Imagine that you get killed by your toaster -- That would be a shame. Update 12/08: After the internal power disconnected about every week, I took the whole toaster appart and soldered all of the wires to their connectors. I don't expect any more power problems. Inside, it's pretty well built but they need to fix the power problem. The heating elements are a little thin so I don't think this toaster will last too long. Customer Rating: Summary: It broke my heart Comment: My love for this toaster lasted all of two days. Were I not so thrilled with its looks, I would have thrown it out in the first 20 minutes. It's like a handsome, charming man who happens to be useless, lazy, and incompetent. Now two years have passed, and I hate the thing. It still warms up slowly, still toasts WILDLY unevenly, still takes up too much space, still has slots that can't accommodate thick bread or wide bread, and now even the ticking of the timer has begun to get on my nerves. Probably because I know that after three minutes of listening to it, 1/2 of my slice will be toasted, 1/4 of my slice will be burnt black, and 1/4 of my slice will be untouched by heat. I'd have gotten a better piece of toast if I lit the $300 on fire and waved a slice of bread over the flames. I got online today to buy a new toaster, and decided to swing by here to warn any prospective buyers of this Dualit away! More Reviews This Dualit toaster is designed for commercial use, it is hand assembled in England and built to last, with an insulated stainless-steel body, variable controls and automatic turnoff. With extra wide 28mm slots to accommodate a Sandwich Cage and the award Choosing Appliance -> Shopping Washer When shopping for a new washer, look for a front loading (horizontal-axis) machine. This machine may cost more to buy but uses about a third of the energy and less water than a top-loading machine. With a front loader, you'll also save more on clothes drying, because they remove more water from your clothes during the spin cycle. Look for the Energy Star label. Choosing Appliance -> Knives The importance of high quality knives can't be stressed enough! Buy the best you can and expect to spend some serious money. It is better to buy a couple of excellent knives and slowly add to your collection rather than buying an entire set of low quality knives. Start with a chef knife and paring knife. You will also want to buy a sharpening steel.
