Customer Reviews of Microplane 39005 Rotary Grater with Coarse and Fine Blades
Customer Rating: Summary: My Favorite Grater Comment: I'm surprised to read the negative reviews about durability. I've had mine for a couple of years and have had no issues with it's construction. The handle can be moved from side-to-side to allow for left-handed or right-handed use. The direction of the grating drums can be used clock-wise or counter-clockwise. My biggest problem is finding all the parts after someone else has put away the dishes. Generally I like to put all the parts in the same place, but occasionally they get separated and only reunited after an intensive search of drawers and cupboards. Red might be a good color choice. I have mostly used the fine drum for grating almonds. It's awesome. The food processor leaves them too coarse and crunchy. The meat grinder turns them to almond butter. The microplane gives me fine light fluffy shavings without grating my fingernails into the mixture. I also use this drum for Parmesan or other hard cheeses. Recently I used the coarse drum for mozzarella. I grated it right onto my lasagna layers. This was the easiest mozzarella grate I've ever done... without getting out the grating disks for my food processor. Yes, it did leave a bit ungrated in the grater, but the rest of it was perfect, and I ate the ungrated part. On my wish list now is an electric version so that I can grate my almonds more quickly. It does take a lot of grating to get a pound of almond meal. Customer Rating: Summary: very cheaply made Comment: We have many other products from Microplane and love them all. But we have been absolutely disappointed with this one. So much so that we have returned to using our old grater. My husband was such a microplane fan that when my mother bought him a grater from William-Sonoma he returned it to get this Microplane grater. Many of the problems we have with this product are listed in a review from another Microplane fan as well. Here are the problems as we see them. 1. Very Flimsy Construction. The main grater handle feels like it's going to break and handle that turns is stiff and makes it difficult to turn the grater. Everything feels like it will break at any moment. 2. Messy. - The way the top is made, you can't avoid making a mess when you are grating. Chunks of cheese fall out of the top when you open it to put more cheese in and there is no way to avoid it. Heaven forbid you turn it sideways. Cheese will be all over the place and, unfortunately, it happens frequently. We are back to using our grip type grater which has always worked great but sometimes guests can't figure it out. The main motivation for switching was the fact that Microplane had made this and that was a mistake for sure. The blades for this grater work great (no pun intended) but the mess and the construction makes it a big zero. Avoid this product. Customer Rating: Summary: Handles broke the first time used Comment: The plastic handle broke the first time it was used. It comes with a handle for each drum, and both of them broke the same way in the same place with the first use. The handle splits, and the knob that you hold pops out. I contacted Microplane, but they don't even respond. I've used a lot of Microplane files and hand graters, which have been great, so I was glad to see a Mircroplane rotary grater. Too bad they made this piece of junk that sullies their reputation. I've used a lot of rotary graters and never had any handles break like this. Don't waste your money. Customer Rating: Summary: Grate for parmessan! Comment: I've had this for about a year and love it. I only use it for grating parmessan. After each use, I simply put the grater back in a big ziplock bag along with the remaining parmessan and put the bag in the fridge, so it's all handy for the next use. After a couple blocks of parmessan, I take the grater apart and put it through the dishwasher before using it again. You wouldn't want to clean it after every use. Be sure you put it together so that you can use the hand you want to turn the crank - and crank direction you prefer - for maximum ease. It can go together numerous ways - for righties and lefties - so pick the arrangement of barrel and crank that's easiest for you. Customer Rating: Summary: Microplane Rotary Grater Comment: I was disappointed by the flimsy nature of this product when being used with hard cheeses. Why not make the body more reinforced in order to not flex when being used? The actual grater mechanism did an excellent job cutting the cheese, but when the body flexes in your hands as you are using it, so much effort is being wasted instead of being transferred into grating that cheese! Choosing Appliance -> Servicing Your Appliance Buying this "service deal" can be expensive but if you feel happier knowing that you are protected from breakdown for a few years, shop around insurance brokers to see how prices compare. Choosing Appliance -> Salad spinner While some may consider this a bit on the gadgety side, I think it is a must as dressings do not stick to water-logged salad greens. Microplane 39005 Rotary Grater with Coarse and Fine Blades Tips How to Maintain Appliance -> Natural Granite Maintenance Granite must not be rubbed with abrasive materials instead, wash with clean warm water to which a non-abrasive light neutral detergent (PH7) may be added. Rinse with clean warm water and dry with a chamois leather or similar. Drainer Grooves can be cleaned using wire wool. |
