Summary: Works great!
Comment: This opener works really well, once I realized how to use it. It seems so low tech, one is inclined to jump right in. Read the instructions so you don't break up the cork. My only negative is that it states it will open 40 bottles with a charge. Unless I drink a lot more than I think I do, that is a gross exaggeration.

Summary: Powerful, reliable, handy
Comment: We have been using our Oster 4207 for more than a year. Still works great. It has opened everything and lots of them. It has come close to stalling on some super hard plastic corks so I use a manual puller sometimes on those just-in-case to protect my Oster. It charges quickly on the charging stand but the one drawback is that if you have to keep the stand plugged in to have it ready when you need it. It loses charge after a week or two if unplugged.
Because of this we bought the $120 Peugeot Electric Wine bottle opener (currently only at Williams Sonoma) that doesn't need a charging stand. I thought this would mean I could plug it in and run it at full power even if it was low on charge... GONG.. nope the Peugot still needs to have a full charge and it has half the torque of the Oster even though you could buy FIVE Osters for that price. We tried them both on the same bottles. The Peugot couldn't even pull out corks that Oster pulled and we had re-inserted. The Oster has pulled every cork we have tried. The Peugeot stalled more than half the time and then you have to work for half an hour to get it out of the bottle. We have purchased at least 8 Osters for gifts. All our friends are winos too. You can't go wrong for twenty bucks.

Summary: Great Christmas gift
Comment: Really nice gift for yourself or your wine drinking frinds. We bought 12 of them 2 years ago and they last about that long with fairly heavy use. Buy a few for spares and last minute gifts.

Choosing Appliance -> Cooking Pans
This is another area where spending money is justified. The best pans combine different metals like aluminum or copper on the outside and stainless steel on the inside. Aluminum and copper are valued for their ability to spread heat evenly over the entire pan, and stainless steel is valued for its non-reactive qualities. Buy pans which are heavy and thick with solid handles that are well fastened to the pot. As with knives, buy the highest quality cooking pans you can afford one at a time, starting with a saute pan and a 3 qt. sauce pan. They will last forever. At some point, a stock pot (which will be especially pricey) should be considered for serious cooking.
Choosing Appliance -> Sinks
Consider which accessories might be beneficial. Many models can be supplied with a draining basket, chopping board and strainer bowls. A drainer extension can be useful for sinks without a drainer where worktop space is limited in a small kitchen.

Kitchen tips -> Peppers
  • Keep chili peppers fresh longer by storing them with the stems removed.
  • If you are using chili peppers, be sure to keep exposed hands away from the eye area and other sensitive areas of the body, such as nose and lips. The chili oil that your hands are exposed to can cause severe irritation. Wash hands immediately after exposure or wear rubber gloves to protect against exposure.
