Choosing Appliance -> Dishwasher
Choose a dishwasher with sturdy compression springs in the door. Also look for tough, lightweight nylon or graphite racks with cushioned tips that protect glassware and cookware. Weimer recommends choosing a model with a rack design that provides the largest, most flexible interior space and is configured for your belongings, including odd-shaped pieces.
Choosing Appliance -> Convection Ovens
Convection ovens allow you to bake more foods (cookies, muffins, etc.) at once with even browning, but without the need to shift and rotate pans. A convection oven is the same as a conventional oven except a fan is installed in the back interior of the oven. The fan is used to blow and force the heat to circulate in the oven and around the food, thus eliminating the need to rotate and shift pans. In reality, though, even with the most expensive convection ovens, you will still need to rotate your foods, because there will always exist still hot spots in the cavity, because the cavity is small. Don't compare home convection ovens with most commercial convection ovens used by bakers and small food manufacturers, because their commercial ovens are much larger than home ovens and commercial ovens don't have any hot spots and therefore, there's no need to shift and rotate pans.
Kitchen tips -> Onions
  • When selecting, choose firm onions that have dry paper-like skins and that seem heavy for their size. Avoid onions that are soft or spotty and any that have begun to sprout.
  • When cutting onions and only half the onion will be used, use the top half and store the root end. The root end will stay fresh for a longer period of time.
  • Tear saving tips: (Experiment with these tips and see what works best for you!)
    • Slice under running water.
    • Peel the onion, cut in half and let soak in water for approximately 10 minutes before cutting.
    • Store in the refrigerator before cutting so the onion is cold.
    • Light one or two candles in the area you are cutting the onion.
    • Be sure to use a sharp knife.
    • Have a fan blowing the fumes away from you.
    • Try holding your breath while you are cutting the onion.
  • To remove the onion odor from your hands, rub a piece of lemon in salt and then squeeze the juice on your hands, rub the juice in, and then rinse it off.
