Customer Reviews of ChefMD's Big Book of Culinary Medicine: A Food Lover's Road Map to Losing Weight, Preventing Disease, and Getting Really Healthy

Summary: Big Life Saver
Comment: Great book. Thank you Dr La Puma!
Since I bought the book back in the early part of Sept, I quit drinking hard liquor, eating junk food and I have started a exercise program and I have lost 9 lbs since Sep 21. Today is Oct 15. I have learned to love fruits and vegetables. I love the whole living well concept and I'm so delighted that it's NOT a diet. I look forward to living this lifestyle the rest of my life.
This book is very easy to read, it's entertaining and extremely educational. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to save their life.

Summary: Not a Recipe Book
Comment: I misunderstood what this book was when I purchased it. I thought it was a recipe book with lots of healthy recipes for different concerns. This book is more about a way of eating. If that's what you're interested in, then I think it's a good book.

Customer Rating: Rating: 5/5Rating: 5/5Rating: 5/5Rating: 5/5Rating: 5/5
Summary: funny and informative
Comment: This book has completely changed how I choose food--and I thought I already knew a lot about healthy eating. Now I know how to maximize nutrition even in the foods I already eat (like melon and broccoli) by how I cook and store them. I have seen a real difference in my nails and hair, and my eye doctor recently told me, after examining my eyes, "Whatever you're doing, keep doing it."

I love watching La Puma on his ChefMD.com website--he's funny and gives great advice. And his book is funny and well written. Highly recommended.

Summary: Excellent information
Comment: This book is well written and very understandable. The author provides information that everyone should know about how to eat.

Customer Rating: Rating: 3/5Rating: 3/5Rating: 3/5Rating: 3/5Rating: 3/5
Summary: Basic stuff
Comment: Found the book to be a little basic and was hoping for many more recipes. Good for folks who don't understand what their high sugar, high fat, low fiber diet is doing to them.

More Reviews What Dr. Andrew Weil is to herbal medicine and Dr. Phil is to TV psychology, Dr. John La Puma is to culinary medicine. At thirty-five, after eating too much of the Standard American Diet (SAD, isn’t it?), Dr. La Puma had become SADly paunchy. So he decided to research the science of nutrition while also going to culinary school to learn to cook. He created the revolutionary new concept of “culinary medicine”–recipes, foods, and meals that prevent or control common health conditions without sacrificing restaurant-quality taste.

Now you can use culinary medicine too. In ChefMD’s Big Book of Culinary Medicine, you’ll learn to stock the medicine chest in your kitchen, use the doctor inside of you, and create dishes that give you lifesaving benefits and truly dazzling flavor.

Dr. La Puma serves up a step-by-step eight-week plan to motivate you and help you change your life. Try Saffron Scallop, Shrimp, and Chickpea Paella. Or Sicilian Pasta with Swiss Chard, Goat Cheese, and Basil. Or Spicy and Rich Sausage and Kidney Bean Chili.

Anyone who loves food, wants to have more energy, wants to reverse his or her family health history, or wants to know what to eat to get and stay healthy should read this book. Its recipes, meals, and menus can work within minutes of eating them.

Experience food you can’t wait to make, and grab the energy and good health to reclaim your life.

Choosing Appliance -> Mixer
Pretty much the same thoughts as the food processor. High quality mixers are great for making bread or other tough jobs. Every kitchen should have one. Be sure that any mixer has all three attachments: paddle, dough hook, and whip. Also, find a spot on the counter where it can be easily accessed at a moment's notice.
Choosing Appliance -> Baking sheete
Not too much romance here, but essential for any functional kitchen. Buy the heaviest pans possible. Also, you should consider buying a non-stick silicon sheet: they make baking very easy!

Tips How to Maintain Appliance -> Hob and grill cooking
Modern appliances reach higher temperatures quicker - and often hold heat longer. To avoid worktop damage, follow both the appliance manufacturers instructions and these rules:
  • Always use the correct size of pan for the burner, placed centrally. An overhanging pan can scorch surrounding surfaces. Don't use two burners as one (e.g. for a large griddle) - it has the same effect.
  • To reduce heat, turn the burner down instead of pulling the utensil partially off the heat source.
