Customer Reviews of Joyce Chen J21-9964 Traditional 14 Inch Non-Stick Flat Bottom Wok Set
Customer Rating: Summary: Horrible Wok... Comment: This wok is terrible. We literally used it twice before throwing it out. After the first use, we noticed that a tiny flake came off the bottom of the pan. I used the bamboo tools that it came with... but I figured I must have done something wrong. My wife started using the wok again about a week later when clouds of smoke poured out of it. She was just adding a little oil before the food went in! The fumes released by the pans turned out to be the non-stick coating releasing/melting/burning. You couldn't breathe! Gotta hand it to the engineers behind this one - a non-stick coating so effective it won't even stick to the wok itself! Needless to say we turned on some fans, opened the windows, and went out to eat that night. I was actually really excited to get this as a wedding present last month, but ended up very disappointed. We ended up buying a new wok from BB&B with a mail-in rebate making the final cost [...]. Much heavier steel used, slick non-stick, works great. Customer Rating: Summary: The non-stick coating came off before anything was cooked... Comment: So, two minutes of preheating with oil for a stirfry on medium-high heat and a small explosion and fire started, then once the flames were out and the billows of smoke cleared, the non-stick coating poured off. Not peeled, but POURED off Bad product. I bought a wok for stir-fry which requires a hot wok. I have used many woks at much higher temperatures, and never had this kind of experience. They were a much higher quality, but I would not expect this kind of reaction even if I paid $10 for it rather than the $30 paid. Avoid at all costs. This product is dangerous. Directions were followed exactly! Customer Rating: Summary: Look Somewhere else for a decent product Comment: This wok lasted about 3 weeks before the non-stick coating started to flake off. It is now unsafe to use for stir-fry. I still use it to boil water for a steamer, but that's it. Worthless junk that I would NEVER buy again, and I advise anyone considering one of these to not make the same mistake that I did. Customer Rating: Summary: Very Easy Comment: I use this wok at least 3 to 4 times a week and it is easy clean up and heats very evenly. I am glad I purchased this item. Customer Rating: Summary: Do not buy this Wok Comment: As experienced by another reviewer the non stick POISONOUS coating came off as soon as food was added. Directions were followed exactly. More Reviews Treat yourself to healthy meals via this heavyweight, fast-cooking carbon-steel wok from Joyce Chen. Designed for easy use, a long handle grants comfort while a flat-bottom surface allows for versatile heating methods. Limited warranty. Choosing Appliance -> Whip / Whisk Many still consider a whip as a "gourmet" piece of kitchen equipment. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is as essential as a kitchen stove and should be in everyone's kitchen. Nothing works better for mixing a multitude of different preparations or for making sauces or gravy. Buy a solid stainless steel whip with moderately stiff wires. Very thin wires are for mixing delicate things like egg whites or whipped cream. Very thick, solid wires are for mixing stiff dough. Choosing Appliance -> Ladles Look for ladles that are made of one piece of stainless steel rather than a handle and dome which are spot welded together. With use, spot welded ladles tend to come apart. Buy several differnet sizes. Joyce Chen J21-9964 Traditional 14 Inch Non-Stick Flat Bottom Wok Set Useful info -> Dishwashers Don't put up with intrusive machine noise in the kitchen. Most dishwashers are now whisper quiet, 45-49dB being typical. You should still be able to watch the television or hold a conversation whilst the machine is operating. |
