Customer Reviews of Dyson DC17 Animal Cyclone Upright Vacuum Cleaner
Customer Rating: Summary: Dyson CD17 Animal Vacuum Cleaner Comment: This is an awesome vacuum cleaner!!! It is just amazing how much dirt the vacuum pulled out of each of our carpets. I would never have thought our carpets had THAT much dirt deep inside. One would have to use it to believe it. It is Incredible! The carpet looks new after vacuuming. Customer Rating: Summary: The Best Ever!! Comment: I had to admit. I was skeptical about spending so much on a vacuum cleaner but I realize the Dyson is not just a vacuum cleaner. It's a monster. I originally bought it because my husband is in Iraq and I adopted a dog. When he came home from leave his allergies were affected by the dogs dander. I didn't want to get rid of my dog so I was left with a very few options. I did some research and several websites related to allergies and asthma highly recommend the Dyson. I looked at the price and was like oh my goodness that's a car payment. I bit the bullet and couldn't wait to use it when I got home. I was truly impressed. My carpet looks and feels great. It's amazing how much dog hair that was found. My husband comes home in two weeks and can't wait to see how he adjusts in a few days. Customer Rating: Summary: Unwieldy and incredibly heavy! Comment: This cleaner is not worth a plug nickel! It is very heavy which I didn't notice before purchasing. It skips and jumps across my burber carpeting. Even with the ball, it is still quite difficult to control. It doesn't always go where you want it too unless you are able to manhandle it. Unless you are an ironman, forget it. The worst part is that it doesn't clean any better than an inexpensive, lightweight Dirt Devil Dynamite! That little cleaner beats the pants off the Dyson when it comes to edge cleaning. It has a slightly shorter cord (but not by much) and a somewhat smaller dirt cup that empties from the top rather than from a trap door at the bottom. However, since I have a longhaired dog who seems to shed all year long, I have to reach up into the Dyson's dirt container to pull the wads of hair out by hand. My little Dynamite isn't nearly as difficult to empty, frankly. If you have any joint or muscle problems or arthritis absolutely pass this one by. You will have a horrible time dealing with it and will suffer after using it because of the strain of dealing with its weight and dragging it all over the house. I was hoping to get an even better cleaner that the Dirt Devil by getting the Dyson. I could buy 10 Dynamites for what I paid for this Dyson garbage. I can't believe what a horrible mistake I made with this purchase! Don't be suckered in by the TV ads like I was. Stay away from this overpriced, underachieving pain in the neck! Customer Rating: Summary: Great Suction, Poor Durability Comment: This is an excellent example of why one should never base opinions solely on first impressions. I am reading the many 5-star reviews by other consumers, most who have owned their Dysons for just a few days, and I am guessing we will see additional less favorable reviews by the same folks in a couple more months. Upon initial inspection, a Dyson appears to be very well designed. The unique cyclone technology does indeed provide excellent suction. The suction rivals my husband's "5 HP" Craftsman shop-vac, albeit with a smaller diameter hose. It is clear that most of the investment for this machine went toward the motor and vaccuum components. The good news ends here. Further inspection will reveal an "absolute" lack of any metal parts whatsoever. The build quality of this machine is more of what I would have expected from a $100 to $150 machine. My first DC17 was broken, right out of the box. The plastic housing providing most of the structure around the motor and the casters was cracked. Always the optimist, I thought this would be an isolated failure. Surely this was just shipping damage. Unfortunately, this was foreboding of what was to come as I exchanged the machine for another specimen. As the weeks past, the cheesy plastic construction revealed numerous additional faults. With each use, more creaks and groans eminated from the plastic skeleton. The same crack appeared in the motor/caster housing after a few minor bumps. The agitator housing (yes, all plastic) hammered out and became noisy and sloppy. This, in turn, allowed the belt alignment to drift and caused 3 belt failures in months 2 thru 6). Other faults include a rediculous extending hose for the hand tools which extends to a maxumum realistic length of about 5 feet. The hose is attached to short aluminum tube (hey, I guess there is one piece of metal on this thing) with an awkward handle. The hand tools are all above average quality, but how useful can a hand tool be when constrained by a 5 foot hose? Finally, the bagless cannister/housing is impossible to clean. Only through complete disassembly and application of reverse vaccuum (ala Craftsman shop-vac and a 150 p.s.i. air compressor) can one extract the junk from the hundreds of pores, nooks, and crannies. I have now owned the DC17 for 9 months. It still sucks very well, though continues to degrade physically with each use. I will certainly never buy another Dyson product. My next $500 will go toward a "real" vacuum, such as a Simplicity or Panasonic. Customer Rating: Summary: I CAN'T STOP VACUMMING !!!! Comment: Oh my, my, my...!! This was the BEST investment that I've EVER made! I just can't seem to stop vacuuming!! At first I couldn't justify spending $500 on a vacuum for our apartment. Our carpets are old, but we do in fact still have to live on these carpets. I was absolutely appalled at how much junk and dirt this vacuum got out of the carpets that my old (cheapie) vacuum didn't! After just doing the living room, the canister was full!! And the amazing thing was that the carpet actually LOOKED so much more brighter! It was actually CLEAN! I love this vacuum so much that I'm vacuuming the apartment almost every day just for the fun of it! Can you imagine... vacuuming "fun"?? I also like the telescoping handle that is long and sturdy enough to get the cobwebs off the ceiling. For a short person like me, it's nice to not have to pull out the step-stool to be able to reach the ceiling. The very long cord also allows me to plug it on at one power outlet, and I can vacuum the entire apartment all at once! If you're worried about the price tag, it's well worth every penny!
