Customer Reviews of Metro Rice Cooker 5 1/2 Quart #1042
Customer Rating: Summary: AKA "Carolina Cooker" is a must-have Comment: We are serious rice eaters and was given this rice cooker as a gift from my mother-in-law in South Carolina many years ago. I was so glad to see I can order another from here. This is the best way to ensure that your rice is perfect everytime, regardless of what kind you are cooking. All our friends, family members and our grown children have wanted my MIL to send them one from the country store in SC. This makes a great gift as it also works well as a steamer. I have even steamed crab legs in it! FOR RICE: Equal parts water and rice, add salt...high boil approx 30 minutes and voila! (experiment with the time to get the rice as you like it) Customer Rating: Summary: Great Rice Pot Comment: I bought a nearly identical pot in 1973 from ACE hardware. Mine is about worn out so I was happy to find this one. These pots are idiot proof for rice. Put in equal amounts of rice and water in the top, water in the bottom and let cook for 25 minutes. Perfect rice; 2 hours later it's still perfect rice. PL Customer Rating: Summary: Great rice steamer! Comment: I have been using a rice steamer (CIRCA 1950 OR BEFORE)which belonged to my mother-in-law for most of my married life (33 years). Over the years the insert pot had become worn and developed pin-size holes in it and the grip on top had to be replaced, but I loved it! It made perfect rice and was great for steaming vegetables and so much more. Some years ago I went on a search to find a duplicate, using the internet and contacting the manufacturer, Wearever. They replied that they no longer made that style and perhaps I would be interested in the newer model. NO WAY! Sadly I gave up, occasionally looking in kitchen stores when possible. Recently, my sister-in-law told me she had found one in Belk's in Mobile, AL, which was very similar to my old one. My local Belk, however, did not have it. She had given me the brand name Metro, and once again, I began the internet search. That led me to Amazon and my most cherished Christmas gift of the year, a new rice steamer! Although updated with a glass see-through lid, the style is the same and the result is delicious, fluffy rice! To tell the honest truth, my husband is the rice chef in the household, so I wrapped the rice steamer up and gave it to him for Christmas... then I purchased a second one to have on hand some 50 years from now when this one needs replacing! I am an optimist! Thanks for the great service. More Reviews Choosing Appliance -> Non-stick Pans We recommend having at least 1 high quality non-stick saute pan. It makes cooking eggs and delicate items like fish a breeze. It also cuts down on the amount of fat necessary to effectively saute. The best place to buy such pans is from a restaurant supplier. Choosing Appliance -> Cutting boards There seems to be little difference between hard wood and plastic cutting boards from a safety standpoint, as long as they are properly washed and sanitized after each use. Personally, I like the feel of solid wood. One piece of advice--buy large cutting boards. Don't bother with these tiny boards that everyone seems to have in his or her kitchen. They are not user friendly. Once you get down to serious cutting or chopping, the small boards are always woefully inadequate and downright maddening!
