Summary: Great Dutch Oven
Comment: We are very happy with the Dutch Oven. It is a very good product. It is very easy to clean up after cooking and the food tastes much better cooked in this oven.

Summary: Excellent Results
Comment: As usual Lodge has outdone themselves with this unique double dutch oven. It makes excellent roast and the great part is that the top can be used as a serving platter for the table keeping the sliced roast and vegetables warm as only cast iron can do. It also works well for cobblers, stews and soups.

Summary: My favorite Lodge item
Comment: I have been cooking with Lodge cast iron for about 7 years and own 8 pieces from their inventory. The Double Dutch Oven is my favorite Lodge cookware due to its versatility.

When using a dutch oven, I usually sear the meat first to add flavor. Usually, this requires searing the meat in several batches. The best part about the Double Dutch is that you can sear the meat in the big pot and in the lid simultaneously, thus reducing the time needed to brown the meat by half. Since the lid is then used for the braising step (after deglazing), you're not increasing the number of items to be cleaned later.

I like the lid so much that I often use it by itself for pan frying. Due to the smallish size (about 10 inches in diameter) and the inherent properties of cast iron, the lid can get incredibly hot if you want it to. Perfect for cooking a steak (it puts on a better crust vs my 12" Lodge skillet). I've even used it as a pie pan in a pinch. When properly seasoned, the lid also works great for cooking eggs without them sticking. A seasoned cast iron pan is the original nonstick and will outlast any synthetic-coated nonstick pan in the market (and without the toxic fumes).

When used as a Dutch Oven, it works like it should. It retains heat well and cooks evenly. There is very little steam that escapes. The smaller 5qt capacity (vs a 7qt Dutch Oven, which I use less now that I've got this one) is also better for cooking moderate amounts of food. Generally, you want little empty space when using a Dutch oven.

In response to the reviewer who has problems getting the lid off, I suggest the following. When setting the lid on the pot, don't align the handles of the two. This will allow you to remove the lid easily, without having to worry about injuries. I've owned another Lodge 5qt Dutch Oven
with a more traditional handle - I don't miss that one at all...nor do I miss not having a standalone 10" skillet.

Summary: Disappointed
Comment: Although a good idea, the skillet top on the 5 quart Dutch Oven makes it awkward and a bit unstable when lifting in addition to it being unsafe when hot. The top is not easy to remove and this was all found before it was used. I am somewhat uneasy thinking of how I would remove the top following oven use. It is being returned for a model with a knob type "handle" on the lid.

Summary: excellent product
Comment: I have only had this a short time, but it is exactly what I wanted. VERY heavy. Goes great from stovetop to oven without having to tranfer stuff from one thing to another. I am really pleased.

More Reviews Every cook's dream: a 5-qt. Dutch oven with a lid that easily converts to a 10.25-inch skillet. A natural for preparing countless recipes, the Double Dutch will quickly become your favorite piece of cookware.

Choosing Appliance -> Cooking Pans
This is another area where spending money is justified. The best pans combine different metals like aluminum or copper on the outside and stainless steel on the inside. Aluminum and copper are valued for their ability to spread heat evenly over the entire pan, and stainless steel is valued for its non-reactive qualities. Buy pans which are heavy and thick with solid handles that are well fastened to the pot. As with knives, buy the highest quality cooking pans you can afford one at a time, starting with a saute pan and a 3 qt. sauce pan. They will last forever. At some point, a stock pot (which will be especially pricey) should be considered for serious cooking.
Choosing Appliance -> Shopping Washer
When shopping for a new washer, look for a front loading (horizontal-axis) machine. This machine may cost more to buy but uses about a third of the energy and less water than a top-loading machine. With a front loader, you'll also save more on clothes drying, because they remove more water from your clothes during the spin cycle. Look for the Energy Star label.
