Customer Reviews of Le Creuset Stoneware Petite Oval Casserole, Kiwi

Summary: Spendy, but nice eye candy
Comment: I made it to a Le Creuset outlet store and purchased 2 pairs of these oval stoneware mini casseroles (first quality, not factory seconds or anything). I kept one pair (kiwi green, flame) for myself, and gave the other pair (cactus green, red) as a gift to one of my cooking partner housemates. The list price for each mini casserole at the outlet store was $18, and I received an additional 25% off my total at the cash register due to some in-store promotion. I have no problem with these stoneware casseroles not being made in France (just be aware that they are not made in France if this matters to you), and am pleased with the quality of the ones I picked out. I will add that while at the outlet store I did have to search through several items in each color before finding examples without minor visual blemishes in the exterior enamel, but then I'm picky.

Yes, these casseroles are "small" with their 12 oz capacity, and a bit spendy, but they are great for small, rich sides. Together with my housemate, I've made chocolate souffles, potato gratins, and creme brulee, and served individual soup portions in them for the dinners we occasionally hold with my other housemates. I've also microwaved artichoke dip in them, and having the lid eliminates the need for plastic wrap to avoid food splatter when using these casseroles to reheat things in the microwave. I'm going to try mini pies in them in the future.

While I could've bought something cheaper that has the same microwave- and oven-safe capabilities (assorted ramekins at restaurant supply stores work just as well), I confess I bought these more for their looks than for their functionality. I like their shape (as miniature oval dutch ovens) and their lovely colors. My housemate and I leave these out on the dining room table since they make such nice eye candy. I wouldn't include these in a list of essential bakeware/tableware, but I feel that they do exactly what is claimed in the product description, and look nice to boot.

Summary: Makes a great butter dish!
Comment: LeCreuset Stoneware Petite Oval Casserole. Cute little thing that makes a great, but expensive, butter dish. Might be a "casserole" for a Barbie Doll.

More Reviews "The perfect size for individual side dishes such as broccoli and cheese, potatoes au gratin, artichoke dip and more. The smaller size is perfect to bake, serve and store. The enameled surface makes it scratch resistant and easy to clean. Oven, freezer, microwave and dishwasher safe. About Le Creuset... Choosing Appliance -> Range Cookers
The way you cook is also key to deciding which type of range cooker to choose. No-frills heat storage ranges such as Agas retain heat they have gradually built up and generally have two ovens without temperature controls - the hot oven is for roasting and baking, the cool one for slow cooking/keeping warm.
Choosing Appliance -> Dishwashers
Check the capacity. 'Standard' 60cm wide dishwashers can take 12, 14 or 16 place settings, whilst slimline 45cm models may cater for 7, 8 or 9 place settings. Compact dishwashers tend to be 45 cm wide and can be placed on the worktop or built in, depending on the model. They may take 4, 5 or 6 place settings.

Kitchen tips -> Carrots
  • When selecting, choose carrots that are firm and not oversized. They should be bright orange to deep orange in color. Avoid any that have soft spots or other blemishes.
  • When storing carrots, remove the tops because they will draw water from the carrots and cause them to wilt.
  • If carrots wilt, cut one end off and stand them up in a glass of cold water to crisp them up again.
  • Peeled carrots are sweeter because they have the slightly bitter tasting skins removed.
