Summary: did not like
Comment: Did not like this crock pot. It is way to heavy and has too many "don't do" things such as no metal utensils.

Summary: Great!
Comment: I love this crock pot. The ceramic pot can be used in the oven as well as on the stove. It's versatile and easy to use.

Summary: Most versatile
Comment: I love this slow cooker! You can brown your roasts and get a bunch of yummy fond, toss in the remaining ingredients, stick the pot in the base and you've got a real roast when you come home. I had to upgrade to this larger size due to family eating more (you get that when kids grow!) and I wouldn't even consider switching to any other style of slow cooker. I even use it as a bean pot to make baked beans in the oven and for fondue parties. This thing is so wonderfully versatile: make a stew richer by finishing it off in the oven, no new pan needed. My husband brings it to work for potlucks and I've never have a problem cleaning it. There's only one thing: I don't just stick it in the fridge to hold leftovers...because I always need it in a couple days. This is the one. Get it!

Summary: very happy with this one
Comment: We've owned this slow-cooker for two months, use it on average 3 times per week, and we're very happy with it. If the cord had been longer, I would have given it 5 stars instead of 4.

This review is written with the following caveat in mind: A slow-cooker should cook quantities of food slowly and evenly for a pre-determined amount of time, and then hold the contents at a safe temperature until ready to serve; it should be easy to operate and instruction manuals should be well-written. Product will turn out reasonably well with a "dump it in and go" approach, but if one takes a little time to brown meats and seasoning veggies, it's all just sooooo much tastier. That said, I'll continue.

While the instructions say one can use the insert for browning ingredients, we prefer to use a 12" skillet for that (more surface area, better carmelization). I've yet to see a slow cooker insert that can do as good a job at browning, regardless of cost - especially those with a capacity of more than 4 quarts. To me, it's like driving a nail with a wrench when you've got a hammer - makes no sense.

This puppy heats and cooks evenly on both the high and low settings. We usually start the cooker on high to get things going, then turn it to low for whatever time the food will take. One could easily just use the low setting for a longer period of time, too. We've never seen any burning or sticking or any indication that this unit cooks too hot on either the high or low settings. The timer works perfectly and automatically brings the cooker to warm when cook time is finished. The WARM setting holds food well at about 150 degrees (we tested with a thermometer).

We've cooked pot roasts, soups, stews, beans and 2 batches of homemade pasta sauce with a minimum of fuss or muss. We smoked two racks of pork ribs then put them in the slow-cooker (sans sauce) to finish. They were fabulously tender and succulent with no burning. I also used the unit on "warm" to hold mashed potatoes for xmas dinner for 2 hours and they were perfectly hot and fluffy without any crusting on top or on the bottom.

Even tho' it's just the two of us home now, we chose the large model so we could have plenty of leftovers to put in the freezer. For us, that is a huge energy-saver (both time and electricity), not to mention the convenience of having a hot lunch ready to go or dinner already made for those evenings when we don't feel like cooking. There's always something scrumptious available.

For my money this unit does everything a slow-cooker should do, and it does it very well. I'd definitely recommend it for anyone.

Summary: Cooks well but has a flaw
Comment: I bought my Versa Pro about 3 months ago based on the feature that allows you to saute in the crock on the stovetop. I thought it would be great to be able to sear the meat right in the crock, but the manufacturer doesn't recommend that. You can saute veggies in it, but it should not be heated to the point you could brown your meat for good flavor and color. Also, I have experienced a problem I did not read in the other reviews...and that is the tendency for the crock to get moldy inside if you store it with the lid on. No matter how dry I try to make the crock (like towel drying it well then letting it sit out overnight) it still developes a bad smell and a bloom of mold inside if the lid is put on during storage. Seems the crock is made of a porous material that retains moisture. But it does cook well and I like the countdown timer and warm feature. If I had it to do over again, however, I would consider another model.

More Reviews The ultimate in one-pot cooking: saute, cook, serve and store all in one pot! No need for multiple pot or multiple mess! Includes programmable countdown technology. Digital timer tells you when your meal is ready. Automatically shifts to WARM when done.

Choosing Appliance -> Strainers
We recommend 2 strainers for every kitchen. The first is a solid stainless steel colander (one big enough to wash a lot of lettuce at once). The second strainer is a fine mesh conical strainer (called a chinois) which is a must for any serious sauce or stock making. A chinois is an expensive purchase, but with care it will last many years.
Choosing Appliance -> Built-in Ovens
The standard 60cm oven has been joined by various other sizes. Now consumers can choose from 60,70 and 90cm wide built-in single ovens. Always check the internal capacity shown in litres as well as the external dimensions.

Useful info -> Dishwashers
Energy efficiency is of paramount importance, not only to save money on electricity bills but also to help reduce power station emissions that contribute to global warming. Look for brands with low energy consumption (energy efficiency ratings will be displayed in the showroom). Levels are now as low as 1.3kW/hr on some slimline models largely because of reduced water consumption. A delay timer can help take advantage of cheap overnight electricity.
