Customer Reviews of Dyson DC18 Slim All-Floors Cyclone Upright Vacuum Cleaner

Summary: Really love this vacuum (so far)
Comment: To start off, I have used Hoover, Dirt Devil, Sanyo, Sanitaire, Bissel--pretty much most brands out there. Uprights and stick and handheld. I live in the country where the dirt is tracked in daily with pebbles, I have a housecat, a woodstove (bits of dirt and leaves come in with the wood). I ordered the slim after comparing it with the DC15. I did not try one out in the store and I did get a bit queasy paying the high price and reading over reviews about everything being plastic. I've been using this vacuum since November 2008. Here is what I think:

It is true it comes delivered it is box for all to see. So if you are worried about theft from your porch I would take this into consideration and be home for delivery.

My husband put the vacuum together in about five minutes and I was up and running immediately. Everything re instructions is pretty much in "pictures" which is an odd concept to me.

I have all tile/wood flooring except for one 5 x 7 rug. This is what I vacuumed first because of the cat. WOW is all I can say. I emptied three containers before the cat hair stopped swirling. I then went to my bedroom to vacuum a duvet the cat lays on. WOW again hair all gone. I then did the hallway tile and WOW more cat hair and dirt. Very impressive with the suction. I do not mind emptying the bin at all and look forward to not having to buy bags. Dust particles in the air? What I have been living with so far, what's a little dust back into the air. Go outside if this would bother you. I also did my mattress, although I don't have the actual mattress attachment. The vacuum works as if it has the ball technology. It effortlessly turns and swirls, without asking. This is something you have to get used to; a new technique.

I immediately retired three vacuums. My handheld, my stick and my upright. Pretty impressive on the first day.

I've checked the filter and it seems to be turning grey. They recommend washing it at three months, but I would check earlier if you have fine dust (which I do). I plan to wash the filter soon and I've investigated in how to remove it (very simple).

Today I registered the vacuum online which was quite easy. However, I could not find the serial number per instructions. The serial number for the slim is behind the clear bin. I would have known this if I had been the one to put the vacuum together. Since I spent some time looking for the serial number I discovered something in the "picture book".

When you use the wand, it disconnects from the vacuum. I love this as the wand is always with the vacuum and never hunting for parts. I have two accessories: a crevice tool (which actually is two tools as the little brush can slide to the end and back) and one for fabrics. They have not been displaced by knocking or when the vacuum falls over. Yes, the vacuum falls over when using the wand if you are not careful in how you place it to follow you. Not a big deal to me. I have been using the fabric tool attached to the long wand and it was a bit awkward and didn't draw enough suction (which if you read, it is explained that suction is reduced so you don't eat up material). What I just discovered (picture book) is that you can detach the long wand and put the fabric tool directly on the hose which gives you more suction and more flexibility! I felt a bit "dumb" about this relevation because it puts a con on the vacuum when there isn't.

I'm pretty pleased so far. It is made of plastic but I should point out that when I changed out my Kitchenaid dishwasher for a Maytag, the Maytag has a plastic lock where the Kitchenaid was metal. I thought no way would this hold up. It never did break. My Fisher Paykel washer/dryer has the same lock. So, I am not worried about plastic parts.

I had to call the help line when I couldn't find the serial number and the person was pleasant (of course my question/problem was easy) and the website is user friendly. I will have to wait for something to be amiss before I can comment further on repair.

All in all, I am pleased with my purchase and the dollars spent. Great suction (did the Christmas needles no problem, cat hair, cat litter, dry mud on wood, tile, rugs); small (slim); wand reach to the ceiling; disconnect for close up jobs; cord has been long enough for my purposes; cord has an easy release for unwinding. One con, no light (but I don't need one).

Summary: Look at other sellers
Comment: Before I purchased this vacuum I would or should have looked arround. I notified Amazon that the company was selling factory direct almost $100. less. Amazon dismissed the overpricing by saying they didn't have time to check every item. They do not have a price matching policy. Be careful this is a great vacuum; however, be more through in checking prices. I could have returned it w/o opening and purchased from another dealer. I suppose Amazon would rather go through this process. I used to brag Amazon, now I will not blindly trust them to be the least expensive.

Comment: If you need a reason to choose a Dyson beyond the fact that they are great machines, type "dyson patent" into Google's search engine and read some of the accounts.

Summary: Worth Every Penny
Comment: I bought this vacuum for my sister, who is a neat freak. We live together and I have a large dog who sheds a LOT. This was my peace offering to her for tolerating the pet hair. The vacuum is small but powerful. It is AWESOME at picking up dog hair, grit, and all other dirt. It's easy to use, easy to empty the dirt bin, and has been worth the price tag. We have ALL hardwoods in our house, with linoleum in the kitchen and area rugs throughout. This makes cleaning the floors so much faster than sweeping the hard surfaces with a broom and vacuuming the rugs separately. The DC18 picks up equally well on both and saves time. My sister was annoyed that I spent so much when I gave it to her, but she was quickly converted and LOVES this vacuum now... I am going to have to buy one for myself when we go our separate ways this summer.

Choosing Appliance -> Fridge / Freezers
By law manufacturers must disclose the energy efficiency of their appliances, rated A to G. These are usually displayed prominently in showrooms. The better the rating, the more energy efficient the appliance is - good for both the environment and your pocket.
Choosing Appliance -> Fridge / Freezers
A large number of freezers have eliminated defrosting by continually circulating the air inside the freezer compartment, thus avoiding frost build-up -- a feature well worth paying a little extra for.

Tips How to Maintain Appliance -> Heat
Rather than cause accidental heat-damage, prevent such damage in the first place:
  • Always use a heat protection pad or trivet (with rubber feet) for hot cookware, or leave cookware to cool on the hob first. Never put hot pans, particularly cast iron. Such heat can damage any surface!
  • If you must put a hot pan on the base of a sink use a protective sink mat, sponge, or cloth beneath. It is best to leave the utensil to cool slightly first, or put a few inches of cool water in the sink before the pan.
  • Avoid pouring boiling liquids directly into sinks without turning on the cold tap as well.
