Customer Reviews of Calphalon Enamel Cast Iron 5 Quart Dutch Oven, Cabernet Red
Customer Rating: Summary: Good design and function Comment: I've used it a few times now and it has worked great on the stove top and in the oven. It looks great too. I've not had any issues so far with chips but I wouldn't be surprised if it happens with a good ding. Overall, based on price, function and looks, it's a winner. Customer Rating: Summary: Great piece, no chips Comment: I haven't had the problems with it chipping as others have. Mine was even bought at an outlet store at about 1/2 off because it couldn't pass visual QC. It's great for pasta sauces and stews. Customer Rating: Summary: I haven't had any trouble with mine Comment: I think the trick with any of these is to never put them down on anything wet or cold, especially not cold metal. I dedicated a bamboo cutting board to mine as a trivet and it's been in and out of the oven and off and on the stove top making pot roasts and various stews since I got it. I suspect that since it's made in China that quality control could be less good than the French alternative, but I've seen minor flaws in those, too. I'd suggest that people buying this should examine it right out of the box and if anything looks odd (blisters in the enamel, crazed spots, chips), send it back. I also wonder if some colors of glazes work better than others, or if Calphalon found a better source for making the pots in China since the first reviews were posted. Customer Rating: Summary: Great for cooking but enamel chiped after only a week! Comment: First, let me start out by saying I LOVE the way this cooks and that's the only reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 2. I was so excited to receive this as a Christmas gift! I started using it the day after Christmas and handled it with TLC. I washed it by hand (nothing sticks!) and never even put it in the cabinet with the other cookware. I put it on top of my range for use the next day. I noticed a small nick in the enamel by the yoke of the handle on New Year's Day. I figured it was no big deal and just went with it. Now, less than a month later, the enamel has almost completely chipped off of the yoke, the end of the handle, and along one of the edges. I am returning this to Calphalon for a replacement but I don't hold out much hope for the next one based on the other reviews here. Customer Rating: Summary: great dutch oven, poor enamel coating job. Comment: I bought this item locally and have used it about four or five times. it performed very well. i did not subject it to any kind of abrupt temperature change, i read the FAQ on the Calphalon website for this item before i used it..it was expensive enough i actually read the directions and washed it first, no high heat was used, it has not been used in the oven. after the first use i noticed small cracks in the enamel all around the logo on one of the handles, after the fourth use there is now a small chip missing and an area of raw cast iron is showing there. i also noticed slight rust coming through the thinner enamel just at the very top 1/8" of the inside coating, i clean that off with a well used plastic scrubbing pad, the rust returns with each use. the oven and lid are not enamel coated where they contact each other and these areas will also rust if you use it for storage in the fridge, i did that one time only. the calphalon website FAQ states that its ok to do this but i would not do it again myself, the rust cleaned off with more scrubbing. i should be able to return this for an in store credit or exchange. it really is a beautiful piece and i have enjoyed how well it performs for soups, sauces and stews, very even heat. it excells for cooking rice dishes. i may end up trying that french brand. ***EDIT*** 1-22-08 i ended up returning this item to BB&B no questions asked, they credited the charge back to my visa...they didnt even look at it! i kind of regret not having it now, it really was very nice...too bad about the enamel coating...it's only flaw. at this point i would highly recommend getting one...but only locally where you can exchange or return it for shure....no questions asked....no shipping costs. maybe Calphalon will get thier quality control squared away soon. i still hold on the two star rating...why chase rust on something that is not supposed to rust? i now have a Le Crueset at $100 higher cost but i love it completely, the enamel is much easier to clean and is way mo bettah quality. but it's lighter...does not have as much iron and the phenolic lid knob is a slight letdown for such an expensive item but you can get an add on stainless knob at extra cost....why not just make it that way to begin with? ***EDIT*** ok, i figured out the knob issue, the metal knob gets real hot...DUH! the plastic stays cool...no pot holder needed but it will be damaged by high oven temps...i have both knobs...easy swap. More Reviews Dutch delicious. This spacious Dutch Oven is the perfect choice for slow cooked soups, stews and fork-tender pot roasted meats. Made of heavy-gauge cast iron, the pot distributes heat evenly and keeps food warm, while the handsome design is ideal for presenting food at the table. Lifetime warranty. Choosing Appliance -> Taps If you want a sink with large bowl dimensions to cope with big-pan washing-up, it is worth considering a tap with a pull-out or pull-down spray rinse. This gives you water anywhere you need it around the bowl area. Choosing Appliance -> Ladles Look for ladles that are made of one piece of stainless steel rather than a handle and dome which are spot welded together. With use, spot welded ladles tend to come apart. Buy several differnet sizes. Calphalon Enamel Cast Iron 5 Quart Dutch Oven, Cabernet Red Useful info -> Food Waste Disposers Installation of a food waste disposer is straightforward, either in a new or existing kitchen but we would advise you look for brands that simply lock into place. Food waste disposers are also extremely durable and a good quality manufacturer will offer warranties of up to five years. |
