Customer Reviews of KitchenAid K45SS Classic 250-Watt 4-1/2-Quart Stand Mixer, White
Customer Rating: Summary: Great, but not for heavy jobs Comment: You can't deny that KA makes the best mixers. I love my Classic for most jobs, but when I get to making bread or muffins or some such, the capacity is a problem. i can't put in more than 5 cups of flour or I will burn out the motor. That means no double batches of anything. And even when I stay under 5 cups, the motor really starts to sound labored. I wish I had put the money into a higher-powered motor. I will definitely do that next time, but that will probably be many years from now since KA are made so well. Customer Rating: Summary: Not my mother's KitchenAid Comment: My mother, grandmother, and aunts have all owned their KitchenAid mixers for over 30 years. Even with frequent use, not one of them has experienced any sort of mechanical problem. So, I was delighted to receive what I thought would be a mixer that would last me a lifetime. My classic appeared to be a workhorse - never straining, reliable. Less than 2 years later, with perhaps monthly use for relatively light-moderate tasks (no breads), my mixer made a few loud sounds and then lost all speeds except stir and 10. Upon researching, I discovered that Whirlpool changed the materials used to make the mixer when they took over. Initially, gears were made of plastic. Next (I suspect due to complaints), KA advertised "all metal gears" yet held those gears together with a piece of plastic prone to breaking. As of April 2007, some models are reportedly made with all-metal construction; however, KA apparently makes no promises because old stock may still be on shelves. Customer Rating: Summary: Kitchen Aid bought Comment: This user sent the kitchen aid asap for me b/c I had a time crunch (it was a gift), it was shipped and sent in awesome condition and I really appreciated it. I would absolutly do buisness with this personb again in the future. Customer Rating: Summary: I've had mine for 20 years Comment: I bought this mixer 20 years ago when my children were little and there was lots of baking to do. I am not a bread baker so I can not comment on that aspect. This mixer has never failed me. I've used it for everything from fruitcakes and double recipes of cookie dough to simple cakemixes and it has always done an excellent job. The weight of the mixer keeps it in place when you're mixing a heavy load. I'm sure it will still be working beautifully when they haul me off to the home. Buy it, you'll enjoy it the rest of your life. Customer Rating: Summary: A Gift for Generations Comment: I bought this mixer 10 years ago at a garage sale for 40 bucks and thought I had died and gone to heaven! Seriously I had wanted a KitchenAid mixer for years but the ole budget just could not afford a new model. It's still going strong. We use it on a daily basis and the family rule is that if you leave the mixer a mess you invoke mom's wrath! All kidding aside it's a workhorse and worth ten times what I paid for it. The whisk attachment is great for beating egg whites and whipping cream (put the bowl and whisk in the freezer for 15 minutes prior to whipping). The motor is so strong that if you start out whipping cream on a fast setting you will end up with cream all over the walls and yourself! I use the dough attachment and do not notice any problem with the motor. I will say that you do need to watch when using it to knead dough as it will move across the counter and end up on the floor. I love the fact that the bowl and mixer head are designed so that I do not need to be constantly scraping the bowl. If you enjoy making your own sausage get the grinder attachment. You can experiment with your own sausage seasonings and also add less fat than what you can find in store bought sausage. It's telling that there's already been a heated discussion as to who gets the mixer when I leave his earthly abode. I've already deeded it to my daughter and I have no doubt she will use it for many years herself. She's kept us in cookies on a daily basis and deserves her reward for her efforts. Stainless Steal Bowl Coated Flat Beater, Coated Dough Hook and Wire Whip Standard 115 Volts AC, 60 Hetz, 3-Wire Cord, 3-Prong Plug White with Silver Trim The design features smooth, rounded surfaces that easily wipe clean Choosing Appliance -> Whip / Whisk Many still consider a whip as a "gourmet" piece of kitchen equipment. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is as essential as a kitchen stove and should be in everyone's kitchen. Nothing works better for mixing a multitude of different preparations or for making sauces or gravy. Buy a solid stainless steel whip with moderately stiff wires. Very thin wires are for mixing delicate things like egg whites or whipped cream. Very thick, solid wires are for mixing stiff dough. Choosing Appliance -> Knives The importance of high quality knives can't be stressed enough! Buy the best you can and expect to spend some serious money. It is better to buy a couple of excellent knives and slowly add to your collection rather than buying an entire set of low quality knives. Start with a chef knife and paring knife. You will also want to buy a sharpening steel.
