Customer Reviews of Norpro Stainless-Steel Expandable Vegetable Steamer
Customer Rating: Rating: 3/5Rating: 3/5Rating: 3/5Rating: 3/5Rating: 3/5
Summary: Too big...
Comment: It's large capacity, but it won't fit in a standard-size cooking pot. I had to use it in my bigger pot which seems rather awkward. Nice quality, and the lack of the center post is actually nice not to have.

Summary: An inexpensive, easy way to eat healthier
Comment: We wanted to buy a steamer so that we could incorporate more fresh vegetable into our meals. We looked at several options: electric, bamboo, basket and we kept coming back to this one. It's a great price (even better if it's still part of the 4-for-3 deal), it holds enough veggies for our family meals and it's easy to clean. We put it in the bottom of a 4 quart sauce pan, add about a cup of water and the veggies, turn to med high, put on a lid and steam until our desired doneness.

Summary: Steamer
Comment: I am very happy with the steamer and with the delivery which was very fast. It was just what I expected and wanted.I am very pleased with how it steams vegetables

Customer Rating: Rating: 4/5Rating: 4/5Rating: 4/5Rating: 4/5Rating: 4/5
Summary: No center post, but a little floppy
Comment: The lack of a center post is huge! I can steam a giant globe atrichoke without problems because it doesn't have the center post.

The only drawbacks are that the leaves are a bit floppier than in other steamer inserts that I have met, and the rings can be difficult to get a hand on (especially if you didn't think about it when you put the steamer in the pot, and left the ring under the leaves).

Summary: Great multitasker
Comment: Since i bought this item i have used it in several different ways. It works good as a steamer as well as a 'cover' to keep things submerged when cooking soups/stocks. Another nice thing about this is that it can fit in most any size pot thanks to the design. It can be opened as little or as much as is needed. Overall a good product.

More Reviews It's less what it includes than what it lacks that makes this Norpro vegetable steamer a cut above your average steamer insert. Without a bothersome center post, there is plenty of unobstructed room to steam entire heads of broccoli or cauliflower or full-length cobs of corn--and finished vegetables are easier to remove with a spoon or a spatula as denser veggies keep steaming. No need to slice carrots or pole beans beforehand--just plop them whole into the basket, which expands from 7 to 10 inches, depending on the size of the pot you set it in.

The three-pronged base provides stability equal to models with center posts, but instead of one central handle there are two ring-style side handles. This is another improvement, as you don't need to reach into the middle of the steaming-hot food to remove the basket, and using the side handles supports the basket's shape rather than allowing its "petals" to pop open flat upon lifting. The heavy-duty waffled segments hold tightly together during use and fold inward for compact storage. --Carol Gnojewski

Choosing Appliance -> Plastic wrap
An absolute must with a million and a half uses. But do not buy just any plastic wrap. Go to a restaurant supply store and buy a large roll of restaurant plastic wrap. It sticks much better than the common grocery store plastic wrap and is much cheaper per foot.
Choosing Appliance -> Servicing Your Appliance
Buying this "service deal" can be expensive but if you feel happier knowing that you are protected from breakdown for a few years, shop around insurance brokers to see how prices compare.

Tips How to Maintain Appliance -> Heat
Rather than cause accidental heat-damage, prevent such damage in the first place:
  • Always use a heat protection pad or trivet (with rubber feet) for hot cookware, or leave cookware to cool on the hob first. Never put hot pans, particularly cast iron. Such heat can damage any surface!
  • If you must put a hot pan on the base of a sink use a protective sink mat, sponge, or cloth beneath. It is best to leave the utensil to cool slightly first, or put a few inches of cool water in the sink before the pan.
  • Avoid pouring boiling liquids directly into sinks without turning on the cold tap as well.
