Summary: William Bounds Stainless Steel Pepper Mill
Comment: Excellant product with well made mechanics. Hand cranks very smoothly. I definitely plan on keeping this grinder for many years.

Summary: Not awful, but a bit disappointing
Comment: I was trying to replace a wooden crank-type pepper mill we bought from Pensey's and which they no longer sell. That was a really good grinder which would have made us happy for the rest of our lives if we had not lost it in a move.
We use a lot of pepper and the little twisty-top things are a joke. After a lot of searching this one appeared to be a good buy because it is stainless steel and has a big crank for lots of grinding power. The one review I read raved over it, and I don't have unlimited time to read them all, so I bought it.
Yes, it is stainless steel, but the stainless steel does not appear to be "structural". Those little black rings you see at the top and bottom of the photo are plastic. It's just a plastic/ceramic grinder clad in stainless to make it look modern. I'm not even sure the top part is stainless. It looks like chromed cast pot-metal, though I'm not sure about that.
It has only two settings: coarse and fine. You turn one way for coarse, the other for fine. It does not appear to have the adjustability of a traditional grinder with tapered steel grinding wheels.
Now I read some more ratings and it looks like I may have been ripped off entirely. My criteria are that it put out a lot of pepper and that it last for the rest of my life. I does a pretty good job of cranking out lots of pepper (though not as good as the one we lost) but reading these reviews it appears that the reliability might not be good.
I am going to give it a three star rating but will revise that downwards to one star if it breaks.

Summary: Bad, bad mill...
Comment: I purchased two of these mills in early 2003 -- one for myself and one for my Mom -- based on a glowing 2002 Amazon user review which was at that time the only information I could find on this neat-looking product. Both mills broke down completely after about four months of light to moderate use. My Mom's mill and mine broke within a week of each other and in exactly the same manner. There appears to be something intrinsically wrong with the design of this mill that causes the components to stop grinding properly and then to come apart. And the lifetime guarantee is not particularly useful either. One must spend about $7-8 shipping the mill back to Wm Bounds and include a check for about $8 for them to ship it back. Your already suspect $37 pepper mill has now cost you around $52. We did this with one mill and Bounds sent a new one within a few weeks. Guess what? It fell apart after 4 months of extremely gentle use. We gave up. We now have $89 worth of non-functioning stainless steel pepper grinding equipment in the back of the cabinet. (Luckily, I have a little lucite mill I purchased in 1989 that still works beautifully. It cost me $2.99 back then and I saw the same model last week at a mega-store for $4.99.)

I have to add that I am frustrated to find that, as I write this, the misleading 2002 review which prompted my initial purchases is still uppermost on the list of user reviews for this product (along with an equally glowing 2003 review) despite the fact that many more recent reviews complain about how quickly this mill breaks down. I understand it might be a function of "helpful" votes people have left over the years for those early reviews (I think I left one for the 2002 review myself), but the pushing to the bottom of the list of all the negative reviews still seems slightly deceptive and wrong.

Summary: Suprisingly bad
Comment: I've now had experience with two of these pepper mills - I bought one based on the good reviews (which have now changed to poor reviews since my purchase) and had to return it and get another one after it fell apart. I am now having problems with the second one. With the first one, the ball on the top that keeps the top in place becomes loose as I grind pepper and actually pops off making my mill fall apart. The only way this doesn't happen is if I screw the ball back in every three or four turns of the crank handle. After a few times of it falling apart and me putting it back together, it stopped grinding pepper all together. I am having similar problems with the second one, although it still grinds pepper with much difficulty.

With my second one, the mill falls apart when grinding too!! The bottom and top pop off and spill peppercorns everywhere- same problem as with the firt one. Additionally, I like my pepper coursely ground - but I don't like huge chunks of peppercorns (some of which are still whole) in my food, which is what I get with this pepper mill even when I set it to fine grind. This also isn't very easy to fill. You must unscrew the top ball and take off the top to pour in pepper. The problem is that I have to hold the grinder in place (by pushing the grinder up with my thumb while holding the apparatus - kind of difficult to do) the entire time or the bottom will come off and spill peppercorns everywhere. One last complaint is that it is difficult to grind pepper- the hand crank does not go around easily, so the high volumes of pepper that I was hoping from this mill is nearly impossible given this problem and the other problems previously mentioned.

One pro of this pepper mill is that it looks good and holds a fair amount of peppercorns. That's the only positive I have about this pepper mill.

More Reviews This is unmistakably the pepper mill of choice for chefs and food professionals, or for that matter anyone who is likely to need lots of ground pepper fairly quickly. The brushed stainless steel body is not only durable and strong, it's also great looking.

Choosing Appliance -> Spatulas
Buy a sturdy stainless spatula for general uses and a Teflon spatula for your non-stick pan. In addition, buy a silicon baking spatula for scraping bowls. Silicon is an amazing substance which is heat resistant up to 550 degrees.
Choosing Appliance -> Taps
Dual-flow mixers provide independent hot, cold or mixed water after leaving the end of the spout. They can be deck-mounted on the sink or pillar/bridge-mounted for a more traditional look. Alternatively, choose a monobloc tap, which is a single-hole fitting that usually has two handles for hot and cold water supply.

Kitchen tips -> Brown Sugar
  • Placing a piece of bread in with the brown sugar will prevent it from becoming hard, or sealing the package tight and storing it in the refrigerator will also keep it soft and fresh.
  • If you run out of brown sugar unexpectedly, mix a cup of granulated sugar with two tablespoons of molasses to make your own.
