Customer Reviews of Ronco Food Dehydrator, Yogurt Maker and Beef Jerky Machine
Customer Rating: Rating: 2/5Rating: 2/5Rating: 2/5Rating: 2/5Rating: 2/5
Summary: Cooks more than dehydrates.
Comment: Just was not as simple as it looked on TV. My fruits look more cooked than dried.

Customer Rating: Rating: 4/5Rating: 4/5Rating: 4/5Rating: 4/5Rating: 4/5
Summary: Worked as advertised, a little slow to dry, lots of room for items.
Comment: Sturdy, easy to clean, plenty of shelf space for lots of veggies or fruits. Evenly dried the products, just seemed to take longer than expected. Healthy way to make inexpensive dried fruit without additives, and to dry vegetables for storage. My dog loves the beef jerky made from table scraps, saves a lot on dog treats! Didn't attempt to make any yogurt.

Summary: Dry food
Comment: This thing does what it says. It takes a long time to dry certain items and because there is a heater at the bottom food 'cooks' slightly but overall an easy to use and reliable product. Don't leave it too close to your oven though, the unit is made of a pretty cheap plastic and it will melt and deform easily.

Summary: Great For Beef Jerky
Comment: I use this constantly for making beef jerky. The trays aren't real rugged, but it has lasted several years. It's lightweight and easy to use.

Customer Rating: Rating: 1/5Rating: 1/5Rating: 1/5Rating: 1/5Rating: 1/5
Summary: VERY DISAPPOINTED
Comment: I bought this dehydrator a year ago...the first time I used this product, it melted whatever tray was on the bottom nearest to the heating element. So, in the end, I had beef jerky with melted tray stuck to it. I called the customer service number, within a week of ordering it, spoke with a gentleman named Saul, who said he would send a new unit and a return authorization for the old, clearly defective machine. I have yet to receive ANYTHING, a year later! I have called, been put on hold, faxed, mailed, done everything I was supposed to in order to get this taken care of. I guess I am out $35 and will never buy another Ronco product in my life. Buyers beware!

Choosing Appliance -> Sinks
Consider which accessories might be beneficial. Many models can be supplied with a draining basket, chopping board and strainer bowls. A drainer extension can be useful for sinks without a drainer where worktop space is limited in a small kitchen.
Choosing Appliance -> Convection Ovens
Convection ovens allow you to bake more foods (cookies, muffins, etc.) at once with even browning, but without the need to shift and rotate pans. A convection oven is the same as a conventional oven except a fan is installed in the back interior of the oven. The fan is used to blow and force the heat to circulate in the oven and around the food, thus eliminating the need to rotate and shift pans. In reality, though, even with the most expensive convection ovens, you will still need to rotate your foods, because there will always exist still hot spots in the cavity, because the cavity is small. Don't compare home convection ovens with most commercial convection ovens used by bakers and small food manufacturers, because their commercial ovens are much larger than home ovens and commercial ovens don't have any hot spots and therefore, there's no need to shift and rotate pans.

Tips How to Maintain Appliance -> Hob and grill cooking
Modern appliances reach higher temperatures quicker - and often hold heat longer. To avoid worktop damage, follow both the appliance manufacturers instructions and these rules:
  • Always use the correct size of pan for the burner, placed centrally. An overhanging pan can scorch surrounding surfaces. Don't use two burners as one (e.g. for a large griddle) - it has the same effect.
  • To reduce heat, turn the burner down instead of pulling the utensil partially off the heat source.
