Summary: Better safe...
Comment: Good product is improved from its older, smaller version. Works especially well when you really aren't sure if the meat is done.

Summary: Maverick Pro Thermometer - Lukewarm
Comment: Much larger than picture led me to believe, a bit bulky. Tip is too large to be fast responding. Meat is consistently overcooked.

Summary: Maverick RediCheck Pro Thermometer
Comment: I love this thermometer! The neatest part about it is that you can watch it go from rare to medium to well done. It is very accurate. I had a Maverick thermometer before and loved it, but my husband put it in the sink in dishwater. DO NOT PUT THIS THERMOMETER IN WATER! The thermometer I had before was a small one, but this is a nice size. You can check a single burger or a chicken breast on a George Foreman Grill, plus you can check a roast in the oven or a pork chop on the grill. In this day and age where meat needs to be done, what a wonderful cooking tool to have.

Summary: Trusty Thermometer -- kinda cheeky
Comment: This thermometer has been very accurate for the wide variety of uses to which I've subjected it so far. This includes not only meats (we're talking steak, hotdogs, salmon, chicken, any kind of meat) but leftovers I microwaved (curiosity) water for proofing yeast (I never followed that part of the recipe before) and even bathwater (again, curiosity.)

I gave this thermometer 4 stars instead of 5 because it is very sensitive. Or maybe it is afraid of the dark. You see, I keep it in a drawer. It really, *really* seems to like being used because every time I open that drawer something bumps against it and I hear the little chirp of my thermometer turning on.

Also, one time I heard a very quiet high-pitched sound and it was the thermometer which was on. I had trouble figuring it out at first, but the sound was so persistent that I finally figured it out. So now I am paranoid when I open the drawer and hear the chirp, that it will stay on and make that noise again.

More Reviews Auto-on feature / Turns on when food reaches 115 degrees, accurate to 1 degree / Great for grilling, oven and microwave cooking / Determines E. coli safe

Choosing Appliance -> Energy-Efficient Refrigerators
The EnergyGuide label on new refrigerators will tell you how much electricity in kilowatt-hours (kWh) a particular model uses in one year. The smaller the number, the less energy the refrigerator uses and the less it will cost you to operate. In addition to the EnergyGuide label, don't forget to look for the Energy Star label. A new refrigerator with an Energy Star label will save you between $35 and $70 a year compared to the models designed 15 years ago. This adds up to between $525 and $1,050 during the average 15-year life of the unit.
Choosing Appliance -> Salad spinner
While some may consider this a bit on the gadgety side, I think it is a must as dressings do not stick to water-logged salad greens.

Kitchen tips -> Carrots
  • When selecting, choose carrots that are firm and not oversized. They should be bright orange to deep orange in color. Avoid any that have soft spots or other blemishes.
  • When storing carrots, remove the tops because they will draw water from the carrots and cause them to wilt.
  • If carrots wilt, cut one end off and stand them up in a glass of cold water to crisp them up again.
  • Peeled carrots are sweeter because they have the slightly bitter tasting skins removed.
