Customer Reviews of Lodge 12-Inch Square Breakfast Griddle with Assist Handle
Customer Rating: Summary: pre-heating Comment: Another reviewer of Lodge grill/griddle pans suggested pre-heating the pan in a cold oven at 500 degrees before placing it on the burner. Since I've also had problems with cast iron grill/griddle pans heating uneavenly, I'm tempted to try that, but something in my mind tells me that is defeating the purpose. But I'll try that a couple of times and see if it works. Customer Rating: Summary: Almost Perfect! Comment: This griddle seasoned up without any trouble at all, and consistently produces excellent eggs and pancakes. The griddle heats evenly, but because of its size needs a large burner to operate effectively. That's the only caveat, and I don't consider it a problem. It's just that, if you're going to cover it literally corner-to-corner, you need a large burner (or just do your bacon in the oven). Customer Rating: Summary: Can't live without it! Comment: I love cast iron and have pans handed down to me from my grandmother. But this square pan tops them. No sides easy access. It cooks a steak great. I have given up my George. Customer Rating: Summary: Wonderful griddle. Comment: I own several cast iron utensils but I probably use this one the most. It has a semi permanent place on my stove where it is used most frequently for bacon, sausage or browning meats especially chicken for casseroles. I also use it outside for blackened fish for which it is superb. It needs a little more seasoning because it still sticks at times. My mother has one that is 50 years old that is the most perfect of pans. Nothing cooks like cast iron. Customer Rating: Summary: Nothing Beats a Cast Iron Griddle Comment: After seasoning this griddle, I have found that it quickly became one of my favorite cooking pieces. For breakfast, french toast or pancakes, bacon and sausage...griddle works like a dream. For lunch, I picked up the griddle again and made some grilled cheese sandwiches and Tuna melts. For dinner...the grill was used again, a steak for hubby, cheeseburgers for me, oh and that 8 year old...he wanted hot dogs. No problem here, the grill make cooking quick and easy. I just love it!! More Reviews Chefs will tell you what your grandmother already knew: nothing beats cast-iron cookware for durability, conductivity, even heat distribution, and value. Season cast iron properly and foods won't stick either--no need for a synthetic nonstick coating that might peel or crack. Cast iron even adds iron to the nutritional content of a meal, just like your grandmother said. Made by Lodge, one of the oldest and most trusted names in cast-iron cookware, this 12-inch square griddle is the ideal size for frying up a whole pound of bacon at once--or griddling eggs, sausage, square-sided pancakes, even sautéing the kinds of things you don't eat for breakfast. There's an extra handle on one side to help you lift the griddle and its contents--pretty handy when dealing with a pan as heavy as this one. Be sure not to use dishwashing liquid on seasoned cast iron, and towel dry and coat with a light layer of oil after washing. Never leave cast iron sitting in water, because it will rust. If you treat cast-iron cookware properly, your own grandchildren will still be using it when that fancy aluminum-alloy pan is long gone to the great yuppie kitchen in the sky. --Mary Park Choosing Appliance -> Knives The importance of high quality knives can't be stressed enough! Buy the best you can and expect to spend some serious money. It is better to buy a couple of excellent knives and slowly add to your collection rather than buying an entire set of low quality knives. Start with a chef knife and paring knife. You will also want to buy a sharpening steel. Choosing Appliance -> Whip / Whisk Many still consider a whip as a "gourmet" piece of kitchen equipment. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is as essential as a kitchen stove and should be in everyone's kitchen. Nothing works better for mixing a multitude of different preparations or for making sauces or gravy. Buy a solid stainless steel whip with moderately stiff wires. Very thin wires are for mixing delicate things like egg whites or whipped cream. Very thick, solid wires are for mixing stiff dough.
