Customer Rating:  Summary: But Wait! It's NOT a stove! Comment: This product has produced consistant heat for me for 3 years. I use it in my smoker about 3-4 times a year on high for 12-15 hours each time. Most of the reviews I read were dissatisfied after trying to make this unit perform as a stove, not an auxillary warming surface. I have found it to be extremely durable and well constructed, as we leave it in the smoker year round (snow, rain, etc. - in Nebraska). I would buy another if this one should die. If you want to replace or supplement your stove, buy something with a little more wattage. Customer Rating:  Summary: Good while it lasted Comment: This burner died after less than a month of (admittedly heavy) use. It worked fine one morning and later that day when I tried to turn it on, nothing happened. It was great when it was working, though. Customer Rating: Summary: long lasting but it's a fire hazzard. Comment: long lasting but it's a fire hazzard. used it for 3 years but the open top design lets in liquids from your pan or pot into the mechanics of it and cause a fire. I threw it away when it almost did that; there were sparks from the coil that went into the main mechanism which has a small opening. I never trusted it so i always made sure it's electrical source was cut off everytime it was not in use and in my sight, and it's a good thing I took that precaution, or it could have lead to a major fire. They should really discontinue these coil style mini-burners altogether. Customer Rating: Summary: long lasting but becomes a fire hazzard. Comment: I had this for a few years and it worked great but I was always extremely careful with it, always cutting off its' power source after every use because I didn't trust it. And sure enough, it had fire-sparks from its' old and over-used state today. I switched to a NON-coil hotplate some year in between, figuring it was less of a fire hazzard, but it broke after a year, so I went back to this one. Customer Rating: Summary: Breaks After 6 Months--AVOID this one like the plague! Comment: I have just thown away the second Toastmaster 6420 burner to fail within a year--the first one lasted four months, this one lasted 8 months. I know, I know, I am idiot for buying a second one after a failed first. You would think I would learn my lesson. After they failed, if you shook them to try to make them work (which was effective at times), you could see sparks inside the unit--very dangerous to say the least. I have seen several posts across the internet that I am not the first to experience problems with these inexpensive Toastmaster burners dying after a very, very short time. Mine failing (as well as sparking) were NOT isolated incidents. This is as bad and cheaply made as a product can get. Not to mention just plain dangerous! If you cook for a large family, more than four rings may be useful, and if you have young children it may be worth considering paying a little extra for a hob guard or in the case of gas, choosing an automatic re-ignition or cut off device should the flame blow out.
