Customer Reviews of Fagor Splendid 6-Quart Pressure Cooker

Summary: Made in china
Comment: First I guess my biggest dsappointment was that this item is made in China. I am trying to avoid items made in China. Fagor advertises their
product is European made in Spain. Secondly the instrucitons say to put olive oil on the seal. Well the day I put olive oil on the seal it burnt
so I need to replace it after only 5 uses. I am still debating whether
it is worth the extra money to constantly replace seals. Maybe I will just use it as a sauce pan for I do have a lid that fits. Haven't decided yet. Money is tight. Otherwise it did cook the items fast
but don't think it is worth the extra money to replace seals all the time.

Summary: Fagor vs Presto
Comment: I have a Presto 4 qt. pressure cooker which I like a lot, but wanted something bigger so I bought the Fagor 6 qt. The inside diameter of the Fagor is 8 3/4" vs 8 3/8" for the Presto, 3/8" difference which may not seem like much, but I cook mostly with stainless steel inserts, bowls and the like, to get the double boiler effect, and it's easier to get the bowls out of the Fagor, a tricky job when they are still hot. But the Fagor makes a hissing sound at a pitch I didn't like at all. So I went back to the Presto which makes a nice chuga-chuga sound with the little cap rocking back and forth, a sound I actually find pleasing (I'm a violinmaker, so sound matters to me). But then I found an old aluminum cooker at Goodwill, which I scavenged for the vent tube and cap, and installed it on the Fagor. Voila! A Fagor-Presto. It has the size I like and now the sound also. If you're not handy like that, I would go with the 6 qt. Presto, nice simple design, and that comforting sound heralding a good meal.

Summary: Nice
Comment: The pressure maintains nicely without the old "jiggler". I wish it would have come with a rack and steamer unit.

Summary: NOT YOUR GRANDMOTHER'S PRESSURE COOKER
Comment: Though I am a pretty basic cook (I can boil water; scrambled eggs are my specialty), the fear that many people have of pressure cookers should be laid to rest with this Fagor. Once you get the hang of it, cooking is as simple as putting all in the pot, closing it, making sure the dial is pointed to "cook" and the lid snap is closed, putting it on the heat and wait for the little yellow bobbie thing to pop up so you can turn down the heat and start your timer. If there's too much steam this mighty device releases it safely. Even I can do it! Some foods are easier than others, but if you want to create a quick, healthy chicken soup, this is your weapon!

Summary: Parts keep breaking
Comment: We have bought this pressure cooker in Bed Bath and Beyond. In less than a year the lower part of the handle broke, and the replacement costs around $15.
It is now about 3 years since we own this pressure cooker and the valve has broken and it will cost me another $16 to get a replacement part.
I find it very annoying that such an expensive item keeps being costly over time. I guess it is great for Fagor to keep the money flow in, but they sell themselves as beeing "Green", and therefore they should not use parts purposedly made to break every year or two!!!!
Other than that, all the nice things written by other reviewers are true.

Choosing Appliance -> Spatulas
Buy a sturdy stainless spatula for general uses and a Teflon spatula for your non-stick pan. In addition, buy a silicon baking spatula for scraping bowls. Silicon is an amazing substance which is heat resistant up to 550 degrees.
Choosing Appliance -> Cooking Pans
This is another area where spending money is justified. The best pans combine different metals like aluminum or copper on the outside and stainless steel on the inside. Aluminum and copper are valued for their ability to spread heat evenly over the entire pan, and stainless steel is valued for its non-reactive qualities. Buy pans which are heavy and thick with solid handles that are well fastened to the pot. As with knives, buy the highest quality cooking pans you can afford one at a time, starting with a saute pan and a 3 qt. sauce pan. They will last forever. At some point, a stock pot (which will be especially pricey) should be considered for serious cooking.

Useful info -> How should I decorate my kitchen?
What will you choose, paint or wallpaper? Modern emulsion paints are very easy to apply using rollers, brushes or pads. Two coats of a good quality silk finish are recommended for durable cover. If your kitchen front is plain you can liven up the room by choosing patterned wallpaper. A light colour will make your room appear larger. Because kitchens are working rooms where moisture, grease and dust collect choose a wipe clean surface such smooth vinyl. Avoid embossed papers as they accumulate dirt, are hard to clean and easily graze.
