Customer Reviews of CDN IR220-F Hot Beverage & Frothing Thermometer
Customer Rating: Rating: 4/5Rating: 4/5Rating: 4/5Rating: 4/5Rating: 4/5
Summary: Very good for the price. Not perfect for high altitudes.
Comment: If in a high altitude setting might not be to precise because liquids react at different temperatures because of less atmospheric pressure.

Summary: How hot is it?
Comment: This instant-read thermometer is a versatile kitchen tool that no one should be without.

It comes with a sheath to protect the thermometer. The tip of the thermometer is a kind of ceramic thermister, encased in the metal. It takes about 10 seconds to register a temperature and this type of thermometer is not designed to stay in the food for long, unlike the older style meat thermometers that baked with the roast. So the tip of this thermometer is the "business" end and you want to protect it from major damage. The sheath has printing on it to tell the average range of temperatures for cooking meats like poultry, pork and beef.

The thermometer can also be used for frothing milk to 160 degrees--clip it to the inside of the pitcher as you steam the milk and stop at the right temperature. It can also be used in bread baking. Some cooks test the temperature of the nearly-baked loaf and you can use it to test the temperature of the baking liquids to avoid killing your yeast.

To measure the temperature, place the tip into the thickest part of the food, and wait for the temperature to stay put and register. Don't put the thermometer near or on a bone if you can avoid it--bones hold heat.

More Reviews Froth milk to just the right temperature for lattes or cappuccinos with this InstaRead thermometer by CDN. A specially designed stainless-steel clip holds the thermometer firmly to the side of any size pitcher or pan; when the clip is removed, the slender stainless-steel probe inserts easily into roasting meats and poultry for a fast temperature read-out. Even though the dial measures only one inch in diameter, the high visibility red pointer and large numbers make it easy to read temperatures, which range from 60 to 220 degrees Fahrenheit and can even be recalibrated for continued accuracy. The thermometer may be used on meats taken out of a conventional oven, microwave, grill, rotisserie, and smoker, but should be removed from the meat as soon as the temperature is registered, since the polycarbonate lens is not oven-proof. The protective sheath for the thermometer features a pocket clip and loop to conveniently hold the probe, and lists various types of meats along with the USDA recommended internal temperature for each. A five-year warranty covers the thermometer against defects.

Choosing Appliance -> Plastic wrap
An absolute must with a million and a half uses. But do not buy just any plastic wrap. Go to a restaurant supply store and buy a large roll of restaurant plastic wrap. It sticks much better than the common grocery store plastic wrap and is much cheaper per foot.
Choosing Appliance -> Whip / Whisk
Many still consider a whip as a "gourmet" piece of kitchen equipment. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is as essential as a kitchen stove and should be in everyone's kitchen. Nothing works better for mixing a multitude of different preparations or for making sauces or gravy. Buy a solid stainless steel whip with moderately stiff wires. Very thin wires are for mixing delicate things like egg whites or whipped cream. Very thick, solid wires are for mixing stiff dough.

Tips How to Maintain Appliance -> Maintain Electrical Safely
The insulation on electrical cords can become damaged by wear, flexing, or age. Do not use any cord that is stiff or cracked. Some clues that you may have an electrical problem are:
  • Flickering lights. If the lights dim every time you turn on an appliance that circuit is overloaded or has a loose connection.
  • Sparks. If sparks appear when you insert or remove a plug, they could be a sign of loose connections.
  • Warm electrical cord. If an electrical cord is warm to the touch, the cord is underrated or defective.
  • Frequent blown fuses or broken circuits. A fuse or circuit breaker that keeps tripping is an important warning sign of problems.
  • Frequent bulb burnout. A light bulb that burns out frequently is a sign that the bulb is too high a wattage for the fixture.
