Customer Rating: Summary: Function v Design Comment: Good day all - -- I am mystified by certain aspects of the design of this product. There seems to be no involvement by anyone that might address some faults. This is why lawyers will still make money on lawsuits when someone has a problem with a product - like being burned or otherwise injured. -- Whoever thought that three tiny 'feet' - not at the outside edges was sufficient, was wrong. Whoever thought that a 'basket' that is 1/2 inch deep was sufficient, was wrong. Whoever thought that leaving out a way to pick up that basket was okay, was wrong. -- Make the next batch with four feet - at the very outside edges of the main bowl for greatly increased stability. Make that basket as deep as the main bowl so we can lift it out without dropping food back into the remaining water left in the bowl (after cooking pasta). Make that center 'rod' in a different shape, or, preferably, make it with a hole in it so it can be lifted without placing your hands directly into the steam rising from cooked, microwave cooked, food. -- Otherwise - I -really- like the way this performs. I've done rice, pasta, and veggies - all were done very well. Both the rice and the pasta come out 'like' they were stuck together - they 'fluff' easily. You can put in your water and your rice or pasta and go take a shower after work and thus - no excuse for not eating a little better! :-) Great from this perspective. Customer Rating: Summary: Great rice steamer, especially the price Comment: My neighborhood Chinese restaurant makes fabulous brown rice, so I asked her secret. Always steam, never boil was the answer. So based on the reviews here - and my budget - I ordered the Joyce Chen microwave rice steamer (with Amazon free shipping!). So far, so good. My brown rice, store brand, took 25 minutes and an extra 3/4 cup of water to really soften up, but was delicious. I was surprised that the directions called for HOT tap water. Haven't we been told lately NOT to use that for cooking or drinking? UPDATE 10/20/2008 - Since the directions were written for a lower wattage microwave (mine is 1250), I have had better success with: 1 c brown rice 3 c COLD water Cook on High for 5 minutes (Level 10) Then on Medium High for 20 minutes (Level 7) Let rice sit for 5 minutes, covered And yes, use a paper towel to catch the overflow! Customer Rating: Summary: Love this product Comment: I was looking for a rice cooker, but found much more. I love baking potatoes in it and steaming fresh vegatables. Steams fresh veggies without stains and cleans up easily in the dishwasher.Good value! Customer Rating: Summary: Spuds n' Garlic (And popping corn experience) Comment: This is the first microwave steamer I've tried that works really, really well. As with all other microwave cooking, one has to adjust recipe timing to the wattage of the microwave, and water has to be measured carefully - a good kitchen scale, measuring cup, and calculator are essential microwave accessories. That being said, it does a dynamite job on steaming whole potatoes - and the other day on a whim I threw in a handful of unpeeled fresh garlic cloves with the potatoes. The garlic came out with the nutty mild flavor and soft texture of absolutely perfectly roasted garlic, without the usual fuss. With regard to popcorn, this gizmo works well within limits, and probably only with carousel type ovens* - fill with kernels only flush with the edge of the bottom cone and stop cooking after 2 minutes** on high or when the popped kernels reach the lid - not a second longer! REMOVE the popped kernels from the steamer and from the oven - you can nuke the remaining 'orphans' an additional 2 minutes** to get a pretty good total yield - but the 'rerun' batch of kernels will be a bit smaller, chewier and more well-done than the first run. Do not try to nuke any remaining orphans a third time - they will scorch and burn. * With the benefit of many, many tests, I've found it best to place the steamer off-center on the rotating carousel before popping corn - the eccentric position (and moving hot spots in the kernel pile?) seem to help 'stir' the kernels - as long as they keep moving (a lot!), the popped kernels scorch much less readily. **This is for a 1200 watt Kenmore - your time may need to be adjusted. More Reviews 2 QT, Microwave Rice Steamer. Choosing Appliance -> Spoons Buy stainless spoons (both slotted and non-slotted) which are solid and won't bend no matter how tough the job. Also, buy several high quality wooden spoons for stirring delicate dishes like risotto (the sharp edge of a metal spoon would cut or bruise the rice). Choosing Appliance -> Salad spinner While some may consider this a bit on the gadgety side, I think it is a must as dressings do not stick to water-logged salad greens.
