Customer Reviews of Sassafras Rectangular Baking Stone
Customer Rating: Summary: product review Comment: It is a gimmick that doesn't work very well. I used too much corn meal and it caused a lot of smoke in the oven. Maybe, if I use just a little mineral oil and corn meal, it will work out. I had more problems with the pizza peel than I had with the pizza stone. Customer Rating: Summary: Disappointed Comment: This pizza stone is one big disappointment. I previously had a Sassafras Pizza Stone(for nearly 20 years until it finally cracked)which was fantastic. It cooked the pizza perfectly and browned the crust evenly. This new pizza stone (purchased a few months ago and which is not made of the same material)leaves the crust soggy. Obviously, whatever materials it is made from does NOT conduct the heat properly or in the same way as the old pizza stone. I say this with the experience of making several pizzas on it. The only way I can get a browned crust is to remove slices from the stone after baking, and put them in a heated frying pan for 3-4 minutes. Save yourself the money on wasted ingredients and a terrible dinner. It doesn't even deserve a one-star rating. Customer Rating: Summary: BUY IT Comment: this item is just fine! you could spend LOTS more, for a fancy stone;but this is perfect! i used it 3 times already and i am quite happy Customer Rating: Summary: Impressed Comment: I was really impressed using this for homemade pizza. My pizza came out great and I like how the crust didn't get all soggy. I can't wait to use it for bread! Highly recommended. Customer Rating: Summary: solid stone Comment: It's a nice addition to my kitchen, and it stays in the oven all the time. More Reviews For making the crispiest crusts on your pizza, nothing works as nicely as a clay stone. Because it's made of clay it retains heat better and maintains an even cooking temperature from the center to the edges. The clay material also absorbs moisture ??? thus, a crispy crust. Made for baking pizza, it's also great for baking flat breads, rolls and focaccia. Choosing Appliance -> Grater In our opinion, the old fashioned box graters work the best since they are sturdy and offer several different grating sizes. Choosing Appliance -> Cooking Pans This is another area where spending money is justified. The best pans combine different metals like aluminum or copper on the outside and stainless steel on the inside. Aluminum and copper are valued for their ability to spread heat evenly over the entire pan, and stainless steel is valued for its non-reactive qualities. Buy pans which are heavy and thick with solid handles that are well fastened to the pot. As with knives, buy the highest quality cooking pans you can afford one at a time, starting with a saute pan and a 3 qt. sauce pan. They will last forever. At some point, a stock pot (which will be especially pricey) should be considered for serious cooking.
