Customer Reviews of Electrolux EL 6989A Oxygen Ultra Clean Canister Vacuum

Summary: Run! Run! Run! from this machine!
Comment: I have two dogs, so I purchased this vacuum for its flexibility. The Consumer Reports website rated it highly. It worked great a couple times, then the problems started. The power head began to work intermittently, especially after 10 minutes or so of use. Then the release switch on the power head broke. The bag change indicator doesn't come on until the bag is overfull. That makes it almost impossible to change without breaking the bag and spilling dust in the bag container. Plus, the bag is really small. I drove the vacuum to a certified repair center 35 miles from my home where it's being held hostage. That was almost 3 months ago. As soon as I walked in with it, the guy laughed and said this machine is a hunk of junk. Well, it's still under warranty but I think Electrolux should extend it according to the amount of time it's been in the shop!

Summary: Size does not matter, its the magic that it produces
Comment: This is by far the best vacuum around for the money. Let me tell you, this little Ultra can suck big time. I had built a vacuum pressure gauge device to measure suction power while shopping for a new vacuum and this little unit measured the most powerful in its class and price category. Other canisters did not even measure up! I compared Kenmore, Dyson and the everyday store brands. I got 150vp on this unit compared to the others which could not get past 50vp. I was very impressed and purchased it right away. A year later as I write this I am not disappointed. I have a cat and dog which like to shed and needed a new vacuum that could really suck the beegees out of the carpet and furniture. Let me tell you, to get the biggest suck for your buck, this is THE vacuum! It is very easy to move around and light to carry around the house when doing stairs and furniture. It is also extremely quiet when running. Did I mention how powerful the suction power is and isn't that the objective for a vacuum? The power floor head is good on carpets and has adjustable pile height. The only con is the tools don't all store on the unit directly and the bag is not that large so it requires changing often. But I can live with that in exchange for the power! I have the power!

Summary: Good suction poor design
Comment: This vacuum worked great for the first 24 months, then the power head became extremely intermittent. The connections in the wand had expanded, resulting in arcing, resulting in making a poor connection. Since the vacuum was out of warranty, the wands were replaced for about $50 (more plastic, slightly different design). After about 8 months, the powerhead once again started intermittent operation. This is unacceptable for a $500+ vacuum, and which for the price should last more than 3 years. Electrolux used to have a reputation of high design and high quality workmanship. I have since found out that this is a recurring problem with this vacuum, and will never purchase another electrolux.

Summary: Not impressed.
Comment: I bought this vacuum based on the Electrolux reputation (we have a 55-year-old Electrolux at the cabin that still works!), and I am very disappointed. I had heard that Kirby vacuums go through belts like crazy but rarely would you ever change one on an Electrolux. The Kirby I've had for 5 years is using the original belt. I've gone through 2 belts on this Electrolux in a couple of months! I wish I could return it.

Choosing Appliance -> Servicing Your Appliance
Buying this "service deal" can be expensive but if you feel happier knowing that you are protected from breakdown for a few years, shop around insurance brokers to see how prices compare.
Choosing Appliance -> Shopping Dryer
When shopping for a new clothes dryer, look for one with a moisture sensor that automatically shuts off the machine when your clothes are dry. Not only will this save energy, it will save wear and tear on your clothes caused by over-drying. Keep in mind that gas dryers are less expensive to operate than electric dryers. The cost of drying a typical load of laundry in an electric dryer is 30 to 40 cents compared to 15 to 25 cents in a gas dryer.

Kitchen tips -> Onions
  • When selecting, choose firm onions that have dry paper-like skins and that seem heavy for their size. Avoid onions that are soft or spotty and any that have begun to sprout.
  • When cutting onions and only half the onion will be used, use the top half and store the root end. The root end will stay fresh for a longer period of time.
  • Tear saving tips: (Experiment with these tips and see what works best for you!)
    • Slice under running water.
    • Peel the onion, cut in half and let soak in water for approximately 10 minutes before cutting.
    • Store in the refrigerator before cutting so the onion is cold.
    • Light one or two candles in the area you are cutting the onion.
    • Be sure to use a sharp knife.
    • Have a fan blowing the fumes away from you.
    • Try holding your breath while you are cutting the onion.
  • To remove the onion odor from your hands, rub a piece of lemon in salt and then squeeze the juice on your hands, rub the juice in, and then rinse it off.
