Customer Rating:  Summary: We Own Two Comment: We were given our first brass pepper mill (the 8" open bottom version) as a wedding present twenty years ago - they were a bit more exotic back then and harder to find. It has been in continuous service on our dinner table since them. It is indestructible. The oils from the peppercorns keep it lubricated. It is adjustable. My only complaint is that it is slightly (only slightly) awkward grinding pepper into a small bowl for cooking. The rotation of the handle rotates the bottom slightly so you have to hold it tightly in place if you are grinding several tablespoons of pepper into a small bowl. Our solution was to pick up the larger (11") version with the bottom cup to catch the pepper. The second one stays in the kitchen. We have been giving these pepper grinders as wedding presents ourselves - it is I gift I'm certain they'll use for many, many years! Customer Rating: Summary: Atlas 8" Brass Pepper Mill Comment: This is the best functioning pepper mill I have ever owned in my 35 years of cooking. That it looks classy is an extra bonus. Customer Rating: Summary: Great pepper mill, beautiful!! Comment: I bought this one for my sister for Christmas and it works great. I originally bought one on ebay for half the price, but when it arrived (on Christmas) it was half the size and was a "coffee mill" with a canister bottom. And it was more expensive to ship it back to Greece than to just keep it so it turned out to be a big waste of money. Be careful that you are buying one specific to PEPPER and not salt or coffee...The Atlas brand is incomparable. Customer Rating: Summary: Pricey but nice Comment: We got both the salt and matching pepper mills. They look good, seem to be well designed, and work well. The only annoying thing is that the domed cap (under the grinder handle) can move up and down freely about 1/4 to 1/2 inch for no apparent reason. Nonetheless, we like them. More Reviews Fresh Pepper is much more flavorful and healtier than pre-ground pepper. Stored pepper looses flavor and can grow mold when the hard shell of the peppercorn is broken and allowed to stand for long periods of time. A dash of fresh ground pepper adds to any gourmet dish 
Choosing Appliance -> Mixer Pretty much the same thoughts as the food processor. High quality mixers are great for making bread or other tough jobs. Every kitchen should have one. Be sure that any mixer has all three attachments: paddle, dough hook, and whip. Also, find a spot on the counter where it can be easily accessed at a moment's notice. Choosing Appliance -> Sinks Consider which accessories might be beneficial. Many models can be supplied with a draining basket, chopping board and strainer bowls. Useful info -> Hobs Hobs are becoming a style point in modern kitchens, and accordingly available in all colours, stainless steel and interesting designs. Wide hobs, multi-fuels (electric and gas) and five or six ring burners offer flexibility but consider your usage before choosing - If your kitchen accommodates more than one cook at once, position the hob away from the oven, that way you don't get in each other's way. |
