Customer Reviews of Norpro Nutmeg/Ginger Grater
Customer Rating: Rating: 1/5Rating: 1/5Rating: 1/5Rating: 1/5Rating: 1/5
Summary: Doesn't do it.
Comment: I didn't buy this thing to grate nutmegs, as I inherited two old-fashioned nutmeg graters from my grandmother. I needed to grate ginger, and this clearly says it will. Well, it won't. In fact, it's just about worthless for that purpose. It makes a nearly unusable mess out of the ginger root, which of course is a somewhat juicy, quite fibrous affair. Then you need a special, dedicated brush to get the nearly unusable mess off the dang thing. Very little of the mess came through to the backside where it could have been scooped off. Instead it all entwined with the teeth on the front.

Now this thing is heavyweight and nicely machined as well as nice looking. The compartment cover fits is a very satsfying way. However, the engineering is horrible. First of all, one doesn't store even a dry nutmeg in an all-but-airtight compartment. Grandma's graters have storage compartments, too, which allow the free flow of air. But more importantly, it won't grate ginger properly. What good is all the beauty if function is missing? Of course, it may very well do your nutmeg OK for all I know. (The fine print also mentions garlic, citrus and chocolate.) I can't return it to Amazon because I got it on one of those 4 for 3 deals so would lose more than I'd gain. I put it right back in its package and hope I need to give a gift to someone who needs a nutmeg grater.

Summary: Great value
Comment: You can't beat this little grater for the price. I wish I'd have bought one years ago.

Summary: Just the right size
Comment: This nutmeg/ginger grater is just the right size to grate small amounts of hard, grateable ingredients into a bowl, saute pan, or sauce pan. It fits into the palm of my hand and is easily grabbable from the kitchen cupboard right above my mixing area. I had been looking for the right nutmeg grater for months, and that's what I'll be using it for, but it will probably work for parmesan cheese and ginger root as well.

More Reviews Top a steaming cup of apple cider with fresh-ground nutmeg from NorPro’s nutmeg/ginger grater. The handy tool is ideal for use with fresh nutmeg and garlic. Grate ginger for a zesty salsa, cardamom seeds for garam masala, lemon rind for pound cake, or dark chocolate to garnish a decadent torte. The grater may also be used with Parmigiano-Reggiano, Pecorino, Fontina, and other hard cheeses. Plus, the petite tool prevents the fingertip scrapes chefs suffer when grating small foods with a regular-size grater. Made of 18/10 stainless steel, this versatile kitchen essential also has a top that opens for storing spices. The item weighs 1 pound. --Jessica Reuling

Choosing Appliance -> Convection Ovens
Convection ovens allow you to bake more foods (cookies, muffins, etc.) at once with even browning, but without the need to shift and rotate pans. A convection oven is the same as a conventional oven except a fan is installed in the back interior of the oven. The fan is used to blow and force the heat to circulate in the oven and around the food, thus eliminating the need to rotate and shift pans. In reality, though, even with the most expensive convection ovens, you will still need to rotate your foods, because there will always exist still hot spots in the cavity, because the cavity is small. Don't compare home convection ovens with most commercial convection ovens used by bakers and small food manufacturers, because their commercial ovens are much larger than home ovens and commercial ovens don't have any hot spots and therefore, there's no need to shift and rotate pans.
Choosing Appliance -> Do I need a dishwasher?
If you enjoy washing by hand, no! However modern machines use less water, detergent and power than ever before and wash hotter using really powerful cleaners giving a hygienic wash result. You can save around 500 hours a year so it is worth thinking about. If you have a small kitchen or live alone, choose a slimline model.

Kitchen tips -> Brown Sugar
  • Placing a piece of bread in with the brown sugar will prevent it from becoming hard, or sealing the package tight and storing it in the refrigerator will also keep it soft and fresh.
  • If you run out of brown sugar unexpectedly, mix a cup of granulated sugar with two tablespoons of molasses to make your own.
