Customer Reviews of WMF Trend Ceramill Empty Grinding Mill

Summary: back for more
Comment: i am back to purchase more of these grinders having bought a couple about a year ago, for myself and as gifts.

the benefit of this class of grinders is that you can buy spices in bulk in seed form and store them longer than you could in ground form. pre-ground spices lose flavor dramatically within a month.

the ceramill is as close to perfect for its intended use as you could hope. the mechanism is both adjustable and strong, while the shape is ergonomic, ideal for grinding on the go in a productive kitchen. having dropped it twice, neither the thick plastic top nor the thicker glass container suffered injury.

this mill is ideally suited for dry spices. trying to grind anything oily (other reviews mention cloves and flax seeds) would end up being a messy affair. similarly, cinnamon sticks won't fit into the mechanism unless they are broken into small pieces first. i haven't tried using dried herbs.

changing out jars for different spices seems like an unsually tedious task to me. i would rather have one for each spice and dedicate the unit to that spice for the rest of its life. cleaning out the mechanism between, say, cumin and then mustard seeds, may try your patience as it would mine.

i wish they were less expensive, but i am back for three more. cumin, annato, and dill seeds from wholespicedotcom...

Summary: adjustable grind top is wonderful
Comment: Excellent product. My stainless steel mill is the envy of every hobby chef who comes to my kitchen - evidently SS isn't available so plastic is what they get as a gift. The element works just as well which is the key.

Summary: Love it. Toast your spices and grind them when you need them!
Comment: I have two of these, one for toasted cumin, the other for fennel. I need about 4 more! The little cap seals the top tightly, and and ceramic grinder is very efficient. It fits in with your other standard-sized spice bottles too.

Customer Rating: Rating: 4/5Rating: 4/5Rating: 4/5Rating: 4/5Rating: 4/5
Summary: good grinding mechanism
Comment: I use this to grind pepper. The ceramic grinding mechanism is great and it sits with the grinding mechanism on top with a cover so that you don't get ground pepper all over the table. The only thing I wish they had added was something to make the grip better, especially on the glass, like a rubberized or textured surface. I find it may be difficult to turn the grinder with wet hands.

Summary: Good Tool for the Price
Comment: This is a well-designed and solid salt mill. What it lacks in aesthetics it makes up for in performance.

More Reviews This ergonomically-shaped hand mill grinds pepper, salt, spices, and dried herbs with ease. The Ceramill grinding mechanism, made of ceramic, is so durable it’s covered by WMF under a ten-year warranty. Hourglass-shaped and measuring only 5-1/4 inches in height and 2-1/2 inches across the base, the mill is comfortable to grasp and fits neatly into many spice racks.

To use the mill, the glass jar is unscrewed from the plastic top half, filled with whatever needs grinding (not included), and screwed back on. The press-fit lid that seals in freshness and aroma is removed, and a knob can be adjusted that offers a range from coarse to fine grind. While one hand holds the flared top, the other hand turns the glass jar back and forth and out sprinkles the freshly ground seasonings. Self-adhesive labels are included for applying to the front of the glass jar, though all are in German except for three blank ones. The mill can be popped into the dishwasher for a thorough cleaning. --Ann Bieri

Choosing Appliance ->
Choosing Appliance -> Baking sheete
Not too much romance here, but essential for any functional kitchen. Buy the heaviest pans possible. Also, you should consider buying a non-stick silicon sheet: they make baking very easy!

Tips How to Maintain Appliance -> Heat
Rather than cause accidental heat-damage, prevent such damage in the first place:
  • Always use a heat protection pad or trivet (with rubber feet) for hot cookware, or leave cookware to cool on the hob first. Never put hot pans, particularly cast iron. Such heat can damage any surface!
  • If you must put a hot pan on the base of a sink use a protective sink mat, sponge, or cloth beneath. It is best to leave the utensil to cool slightly first, or put a few inches of cool water in the sink before the pan.
  • Avoid pouring boiling liquids directly into sinks without turning on the cold tap as well.
