Customer Reviews of Circulon 5-1/2-Quart Dutch Oven
Customer Rating: Rating: 4/5Rating: 4/5Rating: 4/5Rating: 4/5Rating: 4/5
Summary: Excellent cook pot
Comment: A very good buy; cost effective. Giving 4 points because the handle gets hot and so one has to look for other means to move it after cooking.

Summary: This is a product given free with the set
Comment: I was not happy to see a sticker on the box saying that this was a free gift from the company when you bought a set. Who knows if this is the same quality as the actual product or the set.

Summary: Love these pans
Comment: This is the second Circulon 5 1/2 quart dutch oven that I've purchased. I only sold the first one because it was cheaper to buy a new one than ship the old one from the South Pacific back to the US. This pan is so versatile--brown meat on stove top, add ingredients and bake in the oven. Only one dirty pan and then it's so easy to clean up after the meal. I've got 15 other Circulon pots and pans and I love them all.

Summary: My first dutch oven - works well, but has chipped; wrong picture in product description!
Comment: I bought this on 2/17/2007 for $20 and it actually has a domed stainless steel lid and right-angled metal handles, not the glass lid or angled handles as shown in the current picture. So far, I've used it to roast pork and chicken and both times, the dishes turned out well. I've not used it very often since I bought it, but now it has a 2mm round chip on the inside near a handle - you can actually see the inner layer. I don't know how that happened as I take good care of my pots and pans, and have only used wooden or nylon utensils in it, and handwashed it. I've boiled water in it (Cincinnati has bad-tasting water and boiling and filtering seems to work) as far as I can remember, I've only used it in the oven twice, and to cook something soupy on the gas stove top maybe 3 times. The chip has started to rust, so it'll probably go in the trash real soon.

Summary: Very nice Dutch oven
Comment: In case you've tried to replace your Dutch oven for your set, you'll know that they're horrifically hard to find by themselves (not in a set) and if you do, they cost about 8 million. This pan was around thirty dollars online at boscovs and is well worth the price. My Tfal Dutch oven finally died after 13.5 years of constant use, loved, loved, loved that pan and I'm horrifically disappointed it's gone. When the teflon starts to peel however, well, it's the old trashcan for sure! I found this one online in my numerous hours of searching and was almost going to buy another set of Tfal before I found this pan. It's been great - lightweight, very easy to clean, and has done a wonderful job on everything I've put in it. I couldn't be happier, except if it came in colors, purple to be specific. The cooking is very even, no hot spots, and it's perfect for soups. Highly, highly recommend!

Choosing Appliance -> Knives
The importance of high quality knives can't be stressed enough! Buy the best you can and expect to spend some serious money. It is better to buy a couple of excellent knives and slowly add to your collection rather than buying an entire set of low quality knives. Start with a chef knife and paring knife. You will also want to buy a sharpening steel.
Choosing Appliance -> Food Processor
This is a big ticket item, but worth its weight in gold. It will save so much time when it comes to simple chopping or more advanced preparations like mayonnaise. As with most things, buy quality-- it will last longer, be capable of tougher jobs, and give you less problems. To make the food processor easiest to use, leave it on the counter top instead of storing it in a cabinet.

Useful info -> Is stainless steel really stainless?
Choose a good quality sink to avoid problems later. Buy cheap and you will discover that stainless steel can stain and even rust! Mild acids such as vinegar will promote rust in stainless steel where the nickel content is low. Stronger acids such as those used by photo processors will have a detrimental effect on all stainless steels.
