The romantic imagery represented on these bowls, based on an ancient Chinese legend of two star-crossed lovers who meet a tragic end, makes even the most mundane breakfast more dramatic and truly adds splendor to special dining events. Each of the four bowls is 6 inches in diameter and is colored with dark blue images on a white background. Around the edges are intricate borders with geometric detailing that creates a rich, detailed look recalling woven fabric; at center are the images representing the legendary lovers' tragic plight. This includes a Chinese landscape with bridges, a river, trees, and houses, all central elements of the myth. Two doves, reincarnations of the lovers, hover above the scene. The bowls are made of high-fired earthenware in England and are decorated with a centuries-old technique of transfer printing.
