Appealing in its simplicity, Cameroon Sand imparts a contemporary sensibility that reflects the calm of the sea. The narrow platinum edging on the rim is etched with a subtle wave design, while the dotted beige band implies a sandy beach or perhaps a spotted seashell. Contained in this five-piece place setting is one of each of the following: a smoothly rounded footed teacup with 6-inch saucer; a 6-3/4-inch bread-and-butter plate; an 8-1/2-inch salad/accent plate; and an oversized 11-inch dinner plate. The accent plate differs from the other pieces in that its entire border is covered with the beige background and concentric rows of dots. The dinnerware is also safe for the dishwasher, making it ideal for more frequent use than just formal occasions. Choosing Appliance -> Cooking Pans This is another area where spending money is justified. The best pans combine different metals like aluminum or copper on the outside and stainless steel on the inside. Aluminum and copper are valued for their ability to spread heat evenly over the entire pan, and stainless steel is valued for its non-reactive qualities. Buy pans which are heavy and thick with solid handles that are well fastened to the pot. As with knives, buy the highest quality cooking pans you can afford one at a time, starting with a saute pan and a 3 qt. sauce pan. They will last forever. At some point, a stock pot (which will be especially pricey) should be considered for serious cooking. Choosing Appliance -> Energy-Efficient Refrigerators The EnergyGuide label on new refrigerators will tell you how much electricity in kilowatt-hours (kWh) a particular model uses in one year. The smaller the number, the less energy the refrigerator uses and the less it will cost you to operate. In addition to the EnergyGuide label, don't forget to look for the Energy Star label. A new refrigerator with an Energy Star label will save you between $35 and $70 a year compared to the models designed 15 years ago.
