Customer Reviews of Trudeau Graviti Battery-Operated Pepper Mill, Red

Summary: Cool in use but strangely unintuitive
Comment: It's fun to watch and use but pretty noisy for what it does.

Make sure you have six "AAA" batteries on hand when you get it. I'm embarrased to mention that I forgot to insert the batteries and wondered why it did'nt work.

Filling it or changing the batteries involves removing the bottom cap which is is reverse threaded, you unscrew it clockwise. Once open, you use a pull tab to remove the motor and battery holder. Fill it with peppercorns or sea salt and reinsert motor and battery holder. Since it's upside down at this point it will immediately dispense pepper or salt until you reattach the bottom cap and turn it upright. The motor starts when it's held just past horizontal and there's no off switch.

It holds quite a few peppercorns so you won't have to go through that rigamaroll often.

Summary: Outstanding grinder!
Comment: I received this pepper grinder for my wedding about a year and a half ago. It has turned out to be one of my favorite gadgets in my kitchen! I LOVE not having to wear out my wrist grinding pepper into my dishes while cooking. In fact, I can even be doing something else while grinding pepper! Since receiving this, I've purchased two others for family. I highly recommend this product to anyone who enjoys fresh ground pepper with the work of hand grinding!

Summary: A FUN peppermill
Comment: I really love this pepper mill. I got it about a year ago and it works great! I noticed that one reviewer complained about the quality that it was made of plastic, but that's why it's so affordable for anyone - at $26.95 it is a bargain. As I said, I've used mine for a year and it still works great! You just flip the mill and watch the pepper spill out, no buttons to push! It puts some FUN into the kitchen.

Summary: Great Design, So-So Quality
Comment: Reading about the design of this pepper mill had me very intrigued. Some of the features that caught my attention, the pepper comes out the top of the unit, no more pepper all over the counter due to pepper grounds falling out the bottom where most units discharge the grindings. Being battery powered, you only need to tip the bottom up to have a nice flow of pepper dispense out the top. A very simple design that really is useful.

Quality: Well, this is where this unit falls a little short. It really is a shame. If this design were made more durable it would be a have to have product. The area of most concern is the drive motor module to pepper mill body interface. The instructions warn not to over fill the mill with unground pepper. If you do you stand a chance of causing the motor module not to seat properly into the mill body allowing it to spin in the housing. Doing this just once, will cause the little plastic nobbies to wear off that secure the drive motor. This in turn will render the unit useless. The body of this unit is plastic. Not that there is anything wrong with plastic, I just don't think it was originally designed for plastic and the loads on the drive system seem way to high for the plastic interface. If it were made of just about any metal I don't think there would be an issue.

Filling Unit: This can be a little tricky. You fill the unit with peppercorns from the bottom. Take care to rotate the base a few degrees in the direction indicated to remove the base. Tip it upside down with the bottom facing up. Pull out the motor module using the pull ring. Add peppercorns to just below the full mark. Reinstall motor module making sure that it fully engages the grinder and that it seats all the way down. Reinstall the base and you should be ready to grind.

Color: This unit can be purchased in many colors including chrome. Even the chrome is made of plastic however.

Pricing: The price for the unit seems fair as long as it keeps working. I've had mine for about two weeks now. I will post an update as time goes by.

Conclusion: I really like the design and how the unit works. I'm glad I purchased it so far. I will take special care at filling the unit NOT to OVER FILL it. I would highly recommend to anyone that has a love of useful and very unique kitchen gadgets.

Choosing Appliance -> Shopping Washer
When shopping for a new washer, look for a front loading (horizontal-axis) machine. This machine may cost more to buy but uses about a third of the energy and less water than a top-loading machine. With a front loader, you'll also save more on clothes drying, because they remove more water from your clothes during the spin cycle. Look for the Energy Star label.
Choosing Appliance -> Ovens
Most avid bakers prefer separate, even-heat double electric ovens. If that describes you - and you have the space - be sure one of the ovens is equipped with a broiler that provides at least 3,000 watts of cooking power. Also look for racks that pull all the way out and lock in place for safe, easy access to the oven. On the inside, a dark interior shows less baked-on grime, while a porcelain interior is easier to clean

Store measuring cups, mixing bowls and other items used together in the same place. Duplicate frequently used items like cutting boards, knives and dish towels in each work area. Keep two containers - one at the baking center, the other at the range - for wooden spoons, spatulas and other cooking basics. And try to store every item at its first point of use. Keep the saute pan near the range, and stow pasta pots near the sink.
