Customer Reviews of Oxo Good Grips V-Blade Mandoline Slicer
Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent mandolin Comment: If you know how to use a mandoline, this one works very well and is easy to clean. Using any mandoline can be a little frustrating, especially if you're careful and use the guard all the time rather than risk slicing your fingers. I would give this 5 stars except the way it comes apart and fits together is not intuitive, perhaps because the entire thing is white; you have to bend it this way, then that and pull off this piece and then that, which can get confusing when you have a dinner to prep. I'm also not terribly impressed with the julienne blade - but at least it has one. It excels at basic cuts, particularly thinner slices of any length, and can go through a mountain of prep in a flash. As advice, if you're cutting a lot, I'd try using it in a large bowl because then you can move the cut slices around and even put the mandoline on top as the pile grows. Customer Rating: Summary: Not worth buying Comment: I have several Oxo products including a small slicer that does a fantastic job but this is the worst! The "instruction" booklet isn't at all helpful. I really was afraid I was going to have major lacerations when I changed blades. It did a very poor job dicing onions. I didn't try anything else. It will be returned shortly. Customer Rating: Summary: Sharp, safe, lots of slicing options Comment: Just a darn good v-slicer. I had the older blue-light special that introduced the model about 10 years ago and it eventually fell apart. This one is comfortable and slices well. Beats paying 150 bucks for a heavy, steel model. Customer Rating: Summary: the biggest piece of junk Comment: this is a biggest piece of junk I have ever purchased. First of all, you have to be a scientist to assemble this thing. Second, it takes too long to put it together or change a blade, you are better off using a knife. Third it does not juliane cucumbers. I needed to cut cucumbers pretty for sushi and this would juliane and slice it and when I needed to take the strips to use for sushi rolls, the strips were still attached to each other. Apparently the difference was maybe 2 mm but still. I had to cut everything again and I was frustrated. Needles to say, I returned it. Customer Rating: Summary: Close but no cigar! Comment: Zyliss Easy Slice 2 Folding MandolineI bought the Oxo V-blade mandoline thinking that I had achieved slicing nirvana. Unfortunately, it didn't deliver. I do a lot of Asian cooking, so I need a tool that is going to make nice, even slices. While it slices plenty of veggies just fine, I tested it on a somewhat soft tomato and it disappointed me. The slices were uneven and the tomato was a squished mess by the time I was half done. I proceeded to take the mandoline through the rest of its paces and found the various blades and attachments cumbersome and downright dangerous. I think this product bit off more than it could "slice" and got itself bogged down. I don't want to have to have flawless veggies for it to perform properly. Additionally, it's bulky shape makes it tricky to fit into the dishwasher or store. While the variety of blades is impressive, they will no doubt sit idle much of the time since more often than not I will be only slicing. The so-called dicing feature is tricky at best. Better to buy a french-fry slicer and finish the job with a knife. In its place I highly recommend the ZYLISS "EASY SLICE 2" FOLDING MANDOLINE. It's very sharp and made quick work of my soft tomato. It has 4 thickness settings and does them all with ease. It's sleek design makes for nice storage and didn't take 20 minutes to figure out. Good luck!!! More Reviews OXO's very versatile V-Blade Mandoline slices fruits and vegetables with ease. Four blades and a simple height adjuster let you make straight slices, crinkle cuts, French fries and julienne strips in a variety of thicknesses. The blades store on board and are easily removable for cleaning. We've added bonus cubing blades for large or fine dice too! A textured surface keeps food from sticking to the Mandoline and the food holder securely holds food and protects your fingers. The handle and turning knob are soft for comfort and non-slip feet keep the Mandoline secure on your work surface. Fold the feet and lock the Mandoline for compact and safe storage. Hand wash the blades; the Mandoline body and food holder are dishwasher safe. Choosing Appliance -> Taps If you want a sink with large bowl dimensions to cope with big-pan washing-up, it is worth considering a tap with a pull-out or pull-down spray rinse. This gives you water anywhere you need it around the bowl area. Choosing Appliance -> Cutting boards There seems to be little difference between hard wood and plastic cutting boards from a safety standpoint, as long as they are properly washed and sanitized after each use. Personally, I like the feel of solid wood. One piece of advice--buy large cutting boards. Don't bother with these tiny boards that everyone seems to have in his or her kitchen. They are not user friendly. Once you get down to serious cutting or chopping, the small boards are always woefully inadequate and downright maddening!
