Customer Reviews of Chef's Choice 810 Gourmet Egg Cooker

Summary: Boils perfectly; poaches perfectly if you use your head
Comment: I don't agree with the reviewers who gave this machine low scores for performance. It boils eggs perfectly first time, every time, period. Yes, a very little bit of water leaks out past the lip or from condensation; just wipe it up or put the machine on a couple of paper towels or in the sink before you begin (make sure you don't turn the sink water on).

Poaching is simple, too. Make sure you only poach SMALL eggs; larges and jumbos will spill over and make a small mess. If any of the egg does spill over into the heating element, cooks on it, and turns into a hard brown crust, don't panic. Use a LITTLE vinegar and a Doobie pad (NEVER steel wool or any type of abrasive cleaner), followed up thoroughly by a damp sponge (vinegar is acetic acid, which is corrosive). The element will clean up as good as new.

I've just gotten this machine and can't speak to durability, but I'm sure a company like Williams-Sonoma, where I got this great little gadget, will help deal with any such issues.

Go out and buy one. Just the energy you save is worth the price, and you'll always have hard boiled eggs around when you want them without a big production.

Summary: Very disappointing
Comment: My wife bought one of these about two months ago. We should have returned it, but we had disposed of the box in the interim.

The design is very poor, in my opinion. Water spills out on the counter while it is cooking -- because the plastic lip inside the lid doesn't seal adequately, and condensed steam runs down the inside of the lid and out on the counter. Plus, the design of the plastic lip traps water, so you can never get the lid completely dry.

There is no auto-off feature. When it decides it's finished -- based on the setting for cook-time length -- it beeps at you, but doesn't shut itself off. If you happen to be in another room, or don't hear the beeping, it will boil off the remaining water and -- probably -- melt the plastic rack and eventually burn itself out.

We had an Oster 4716 Egg Cooker for about a year before it burned itself out, but I'd definitely recommend one of those over this Chef's Choice item.

Summary: I loved until it stopped working 6 months later
Comment: I loved this product. Made it fast and simple to boil eggs. I know it is simple on the stove, but I sometimes forget to put the timer on and they get over done. The eggs came out perfectly with this egg cooker. We used it a few times a week and we follow the directions. To my suprise, it just stopped working. It worked fine yesterday and today it wouldn't even come on. It will be 6 months of having it on 8/7/2008, so I'm not pleased that it just stopped working. I have the number of the manufacturer and hopefully they will honor the one year warranty.

Summary: There is a difference between boiled and steamed
Comment: I never thought I would be praising the virtues of an egg cooker until I had an egg that had been steamed. Wow, what a difference. Even cooked to the hard state, both the white and yolk are melt in your mouth soft and tender. A completely different texture than you get with boiling. The steamed eggs are also easy to peel and this cooker doesn't require piercing the shell, like others do. Once you've steam eggs, you won't ever want to go back to boiling them.

Summary: we love this!
Comment: We are thoroughly enjoying this egg cooker. We are a big fan of boiled and poached eggs but I tended to cook boiled eggs too long and I didn't like cleaning up the nonstick holders for my egg poacher. With this you can time the eggs perfectly. I did burn myself once dumping the water so I would suggest waiting until it cools if possible but overall, it has been a great purchase.. and it doesn't tale up much space at all if you are worried about yet ANOTHER appliance like I as!

Choosing Appliance -> Ladles
Look for ladles that are made of one piece of stainless steel rather than a handle and dome which are spot welded together. With use, spot welded ladles tend to come apart. Buy several differnet sizes.
Choosing Appliance -> Knives
The importance of high quality knives can't be stressed enough! Buy the best you can and expect to spend some serious money. It is better to buy a couple of excellent knives and slowly add to your collection rather than buying an entire set of low quality knives. Start with a chef knife and paring knife. You will also want to buy a sharpening steel.

Useful info -> Dishwashers
A concealed heating element reduces the risk of lightweight plastic items such as children's drinking cups melting onto it after becoming dislodged mid-cycle. Limescale build-up is also prevented. Some manufacturers now produce models with the concealed heating element coiled around the water inlet pipe for further energy efficiency.
